:) :(;) :D :-P :-O

DO you know what these signs mean? (Find the answers at the picture on the right.) They are called emoticons (emotion + icon, 表情符号). Perhaps you use them when you're writing e-mails or chatting with friends online.

But, who invented them?

It may be Scott E. Fahlman, a professor of Carnegie Mellon University, US. He is said to be the first to use the smiley face sign :-).

Fahlman used the emoticon on an online bulletin board (公告牌) on September 19, 1982.

Twenty-five years later, the smiley sign is really popular. Other emoticons, such as the "wink" sign, came later. Besides signs, people today also use small yellow faces to show different emotions.

The emoticons help people express their emotions online. When you type a sentence on MSN it's hard for the other person to know what you're feeling. It's because when we speak we use different tones of voice. When we're writing we can't do this.

For example, your friend writes "I'm mad with you." But if he adds a smiley face, you know he's only joking.
