Yes

Reconstruction can still teach us about our history.

Peng Manyue: According to the renovation (修复) plan, nearly 10 percent of the ruins, mostly palace gates and walls, will be rebuilt. Thus, I believe that proportional (部分的) reconstruction will not only preserve the current appearance of the ruins, but also exhibit the original beautiful architecture of Yuanmingyuan.

Su Huanwen: Yuanmingyuan is regarded as a symbol to remind China of its shameful history when European imperialists (帝国主义者) bullied (欺辱) it. But personally, I think it should be rebuilt. Its reconstruction will give us our dignity back. It can show how prosperous China has become.

Liang Shuhua: Reconstruction doesn't mean forgetting history. The Yuanmingyuan project is designed to show the sharp contrast between the previously splendid garden and its present condition. While awed (敬畏) by the beauty, people may at the same time grieve (伤心) for the destruction caused by Western powers.

No

Reconstruction may affect the park's historic value.

Shi Liushan: Preserving the ruins keep the truth of history. Yuanmingyuan, as it stands today, is the best material for a patriotic (爱国的) education. Rebuilding will not only cost money, but will also obscure (使模糊) an episode (部分) in our history.

Qin Yuxia: I fear this park after construction will turn into another tacky (俗气的) tourist trap like so many around the rest of China. This is somewhat like the Greeks trying to reconstruct the Parthenon (帕台农神庙). It would no longer be a historical site, losing all its precious value.

Pan Qiaoling: I advocate keeping Yuanmingyuan as it is. Reconstruction may destroy Yuanmingyuan as a heritage site. Besides, it will take a great deal of money and human power, which could be better used to improve the backward conditions in certain areas of China.
