IMAGINATION can be magic. It can turn an item as common as a chair into a piece of art. You don’t you believe it? Then go to the 300 Percent Spanish Design, an exhibition show running from September 26 to November 10 in Beijing.

There are 100 chairs, 100 lamps (灯) and 100 posters from 1900-2007 showing “Spanish creative power”.

The most famous chair in the exhibition is the lip-shaped sofa designed by Spanish artist Salvador Dali (萨尔瓦多·达利 ) (1904–1989). It is an example of surrealism (超现实主义).

Surrealism was a movement in both literature and the visual arts (视觉艺术). It started in Paris in 1924 and lasted until the 1940s. Surrealists believed that logical thinking (逻-思维) had failed to help society develop and solve its problems.

So these artists looked to the mind in dreams and imagination to go beyond logical thinking. Their works were filled with familiar objects, which were painted to look strange or mysterious. The artists hoped their odd (古怪的) paintings would make people look at things in a different way. “An artist is not one who is inspired, but one who can inspire others,” said Dali.

Melting Clocks

Salvador Dali’s Persistence of Memory painting is the key representation of surrealism.

It is also called Soft Watches or Melting Clocks. The general interpretation (解读) of the work is that the soft watches show time is not rigid or deterministic (确定的).
