THE world needs to make a choice quickly: ban human cloning or prepare for the creation of cloned humans, UN researchers said recently.

The best solution may be to ban human cloning, but allow some strictly controlled research on it, according to a report from the United Nations University Institute for Advanced Studies in Japan.

Almost all countries oppose human cloning and more than 50 nations have introduced laws banning it. But a lack of a global law means scientists can clone humans in countries where the ban does not exist.

“Failure to outlaw cloning means it is just a matter of time until cloned humans share the planet,” said Brendan Tobin, a human rights lawyer who helped write the report.

“If the failure to stop this happening continues, the world must accept responsibility and make sure that any cloned person receives full human rights,” he said.

Scientists have managed to clone mice, sheep, pigs, cows and dogs. Last summer US researchers accomplished the first cloning of a primate (灵长类) – a monkey.

There have been no reports of cloned humans, but such a historic event is not far off, most experts agree.

Two types of cloning

Reproductive cloning means creating an exact whole copy of a person or animal.

Research cloning means creating tissues (组织) that genetically match those of the person or animal whose cells are cloned.

Some people support research cloning because they argue it offers great hope for producing replacement tissue, such as new kidneys (肾) or hearts for example. They say it might also help scientists to find a cure for diseases such as cancer, Parkinson’s (帕金森病) and diabetes (糖尿病).

However, opponents view research cloning as the unethical (不道德的) production and the destruction of living embryos (胚胎).
