WHEN you get thirsty (渴), what's your first choice as you rush into the canteen (小卖部) of your school? Cola, Qoo or Red Bull? These three soft drinks are on sale in most schools.

But students in schools in Taiwan can no longer buy these drinks as the education department banned them from campuses in late February. From now on, only healthy drinks are allowed. Students there can now only get pure fruit or vegetable juice, milk, soybean milk (豆浆), yoghurt, and mineral water, in school.

Research suggests kids who drink lots of soft drinks can put on weight, have weak bones, have bad teeth and can become addicted to caffeine. Other countries such as the US have introduced similar rules banning the sale of soft drinks to students during lunch hours.

For your own health, read on and think twice next time before you buy a bottle of cola. There are better choices other than soft drinks.

Milk is one of the best sources of calcium and Vitamin D needed for strong bones. Children between the ages of one and two should drink whole milk.

After age two, children may drink skim milk (脱脂奶).

* Soft drinks are the largest source of sugar in your diet.

* Many teens are choosing soft drinks instead of milk, water, and 100%

natural fruit juices. This is one cause of teen weight problems.

* When teens drink a lot of soft drinks, hundreds of extra calories are taken in without even feeling full.

* By drinking soft drinks instead of milk, teens miss out on important nutrients, such as calcium and Vitamin D. A lack of enough calcium can causes bones to break easily later in life.

* Fruit punch (水果混合饮料), sports drinks, and juice drinks are also

high in sugar and low in nutrients.

* Although diet drinks, such as diet cola, don't contain so much sugar

and calories, they should not replace healthy drinks in the diet. You should not drink them often.
