Breathing while sleeping
作者:21ST    来源:高中版第37期    日期: 2010-03-31
人教版高二年级:Under the sea

关键词:Nature: animals and plants under the sea; legends of the sea

话题归类:自然Nature

Q: Do whales (鲸鱼) and dolphins (海豚) sleep? And how can they breath in water while they're sleeping?

A: They do sleep, but in a different way to humans.

Because of their undersea (海面下的) environment, whales and dolphins must actively (主动地) decide when to breathe. As a result, in order to breathe, they have to be awake (醒的).

Thus, they let one half of the brain sleep at a time. So the animal is never completely unconscious (无意识的), but it still gets the rest it needs.

Research results have shown that half of a dolphin's brain "shuts down" (这里指停止工作) while the other half is still active. Researchers have observed that dolphins are in this state for about eight hours a day.
