DO you really know yourself? Experts say when thinking about what career path to follow it would help to know more about yourself. So Teens provides you with a test that can help you understand what job you might be fit for. The test is based on famous US psychologist and career specialist John Holland's theory of vocational choice.

This theory says that "Birds of the same feather flock together" (物以类聚,人以群分). In other words, people like to be around others who have similar personalities. In choosing a career, it means that people choose jobs where they can be around other people who are like them.

It is the best-known and most widely researched theory on this topic and is used by many career counsellors (职业顾问).

Summary of theory

Holland's theory says most people are one of six personality types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional.

People of the same personality tend to "flock together". For example, Artistic people are attracted to making friends and working with Artistic people.

People of the same type working together create a work environment that fits their type. For example, when artistic people are together, they create a work environment that thinks highly of creativity (创造力) - an artistic environment.

There are six basic types of work environments to go with each personality type.

People who choose to work in an environment similar to their personality type are more likely to be successful and satisfied. For example, Artistic people are more likely to be successful and satisfied if they choose a job that has an Artistic environment, like choosing to be a dance teacher in a dancing school.

How you act and feel at work depends largely on your workplace environment. If you are working with people who have a personality type like yours, you will be able to do many of the things they can do. This will make you feel more comfortable with them.

It means that you probably should choose a job whose type is the same as, or similar to, your personality type. For example, imagine that your highest score on the following test is for the Realistic type.

Looking at the table on the right, you can see that the most compatible (一致的) job environment is Realistic.

This suggests that you choose from the jobs that are in the Realistic group.

Or, you might choose from the jobs that fall in the Investigative or Conventional group.

Compatible Work Environments
Personality Type Most Compatible Compatible
Realistic Realistic Investigative & Conventional
Investigative Investigative Investigative & Social
Artistic Artistic Investigative
Social Social Artistic & Enterprising
Enterprising Enterprising Social & Conventionla
Conventional Conventional Enterprising & Realistic

We all have characteristics related to (涉及) each of the six types. However, most of us tend to have more in at least one or two types. Once you learn the types in which you are dominant (占优势的), you can explore college majors and career choices that seem to relate to those types.

Choosing college majors and career paths that match your interests may increase the likelihood of satisfaction and success in your whole life.
