故宫里璀璨的珍宝数不胜数。在它们的背后,还有一段鲜为人知的故事……

THE largest museum in the world, the Palace Museum, holds cultural treasures from the past 5,000 years of Chinese history.

You've probably already heard of some famous pieces there, such as Qingming Shang He Tu, which was painted by Zhang Zeduan in the early 12th century.

The painting shows us what everyday life was like in the Northern Song capital, Bianjing (which today is Kaifeng, Henan Province).

And there is the lovely Boy-Shaped Pillow (枕头) made in the Song Dynasty (朝代). It is one of the most precious works of Chinese porcelain (陶瓷) art. Jade (玉石) and porcelain were used for old pillows because people believed they could comfort the body and improve the eyesight.

We can also see other treasures like the beautiful "Made by Zhang Cheng" Lacquer (漆器) Plate made in the Yuan Dynasty, or the Painted Wooden Statue (木雕) of Guanyin made during the Northern Song dynasty.

Beijing isn't the only city with a Palace Museum. There's another one in Taipei.

During the anti-Japanese war (抗日战争), to keep the treasures of the Palace Museum safe, everything was put into more than 13,000 boxes and sent to many places, including Shanghai, Chengdu and Nanjing.

In 1949, the Kuomintang government was defeated by the Communist armies and ran away to Taiwan. When they left, they took 2,972 boxes of the Palace Museum collection with them.

In 1965, another Palace Museum was set up in Taipei to display the relics. The museum holds a collection of about 700,000 pieces, among which are famous pieces like the "Jadeite Cabbage with Insects" ("翠玉白菜").

Help protect the treasures

When you go to the Forbidden City, enjoy all of the interesting things you see there. But also make sure you don't do anything to hurt this valuable (有价值的) part of Chinese history.

1. Wear soft-sole (软底的) shoes. The ground of the Forbidden City is covered with very old bricks. Shoes with hard or metal soles could break them.

2. Don't overcrowd (过分拥挤) the places you visit in the Forbidden City. Pushing the walls and pillars (柱子) could cause serious damage (破坏). Also, don't write on anything in the City.

3. Never take photos of old things in the museum. Too much light is bad for old paintings and other relics.

Book a free visit to the Forbidden City

The Forbidden City, also known as the Palace Museum, was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is 780,000 square meters (平方米) large. The museum is the country's largest one and holds China's largest collection of treasures. The United Nations listed it as a World Heritage Site (世界文化遗产) in 1987.

To book a group visit, please call the Palace Museum's Department of Exhibition and Publicity (010-85117240) five days before the visit date. Student groups must be at least 20 people. Visits on national holidays are not free.

Interesting facts about the Forbidden City

.The City's palaces have 9,999 rooms altogether. Chinese people traditionally (传统地) have thought of nine as a lucky number.

.It took 200,000 workers more than 13 years (1407-1420) to build the Forbidden City.

.All the Forbidden City's buildings are made of painted wood. Because this could easily cause a fire, bronze cauldrons (铜水缸) filled with water were put in many places inside the City.

.At the end of the 18th century, many people lived inside the Forbidden City: guards, servants, eunuchs (太监), concubines (嫔妃), civil servants and the royal family (皇室) - about 9,000 people in all.
