不再对民族自豪感讳莫如深,300万人参加投票评选“最伟大的德国人”。

MORE than 3 million Germans took part in the final vote of a three-month television contest on November 28 to decide who is "the best German of all time".

Konrad Adenauer, the man who led former West Germany to economic success in the 1950s, came out on top. He was followed by religious (宗教的) reformer Martin Luther and Karl Marx, the founder of Communism.

The contest also marks a turning point in the German people's attitude towards national pride. Ever since the end of World War II, the idea of a national hero was not encouraged. It was believed to relate to the Nazi Germany of Adolf Hitler, who used national pride as an excuse for extreme racism and mass-murderer.

With this dark cloud from the mid-20th century hanging over their heads, German people were embarrassed to celebrate their history. However, time is proving to be a great healer (疗伤药). "I belong to a generation that dare not mention the word 'patriotism'

(爱国主义)," said Germany's Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer in a speech to his Green Party. "But if patriotism means respect for democratic values, overcoming nationalistic prejudices (偏见) and protecting minorities, then I'm happy to call myself a patriot."

In an attempt to encourage this proper national pride, ZDF television, which organized the contest, left out Hitler and other top Nazis from the candidate list. "The best-known German was the biggest killer of all time," ZDF director Guido Knopp said. "Our project was 'Germany's best' and there was no room for a mass-killer."

The character and achievements of the most popular Germans show that the voters put high value on caring for others, contributing to the country and having the courage to find the truth.

Others in the top 10 include Hitler fighters Sophie and Hans Scholl and composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Germany's greatest writer Johann Wolfgang Goethe and the world famous scientist Albert Einstein were also part of this leading group.
