狼来了,不过这次带来的是种种意想不到的好处。

SCIENTISTS in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, US, recently started a special project to study how good wolves are at protecting other creatures in the park.

"Traditionally, wolves have a bad image in many countries as they are seen as a threat to other animals. But we have been surprised to see how good they have been in protecting other species over the past 10 years," said Douglas Smith, a wolf biologist at the park.

In the 1920s, in order to protect other animals like elks (北美麋鹿), hunters began to kill all local wolves. But by doing this, the ecosystem became imbalanced (不平衡的), and there were too many elks. They ate all the plants they could find. This chain effect hurt the whole ecosystem in the park.

In 1995, 14 wolves from Canada were reintroduced to Yellowstone. Now, there are about 130 wolves in the park. As wolves start to hunt elks, elks have to move more than they used to and won't stay long in an insecure place, such as by the riverside. In those places there are now large numbers of young trees growing up.

image [??????] n. 形象
species n. 物种;种类
insecure adj. 不安全的
The shade of the trees makes a better environment for fish and birds. Beavers (海狸) love these trees and are now living in the streams and rivers in the park.

Many other species, like foxes that cannot kill adult elks, also benefit, by scavenging (以腐肉为食) off of what the wolves kill.

"Wolves mean a healthier food chain in Yellowstone, helping to keep the ecosystem balanced," Smith said.

New theories on environment and animal protection argue that measures on protecting a single species may break the balance of the whole system. Therefore, the best way to protect nature is to reduce people's interference (干预). This theory has been adopted by many national parks newly established in China.
