看不见、摸不着的东西也能得到保护吗?

HAVE a look at the World Heritage List. All the things on there are places or things you can see or touch (触摸). But can we always see or touch our culture? There are some important parts of it that we can't see, like music or languages.

How can we protect (保护) things like that? UNESCO has an answer. In 1998, UNESCO made the World Intangible (无形的) Heritage List for parts of culture like languages, stories, music, dance, games, mythology (神话), rituals (仪式) or traditional craftsmanship (传统工艺).

Intangible heritage, also called "living cultural heritage," is passed on from one generation (一代人) to the next. Intangible heritage changes over time as people and their culture change. But they also keep some parts of very old culture alive. This helps us to learn about people who lived long ago. And it also shows us many smart things that people did long ago.

But intangible heritage is easy to forget, especially now that we often just watch TV instead of learning about our cultures. If we don't keep it alive, our grandchildren may not have it at all. So UNESCO made the list and asks people to help protect them.

So far, 47 pieces of intangible heritage around the world are on the list. China has two: Kunqu opera (昆曲) and guqin (古琴) music.
