How China has helped its poor
作者:21ST    来源:初中版第37期    日期: 2010-12-14
外研版初三年级:Population

关键词:Population and water

话题归类:热点话题Topical issues

CHINA has the world's largest population (人口) and a lot of poor people.

So the Government has a different way from the UN to tell how many of its people live in poverty.

Chinese living on less than 637 yuan a year are in terrible poverty. Those who live on less than 882 yuan are in the low income (低收入) group.

In 1978, 250 million Chinese lived in extreme poverty. Today, 29 million, or 3 per cent of the population, lives that way. Most are farmers from central (中部的) and western China.

Since 1980, the Government has spent more than 102 billion yuan building roads and giving clean water to poor people.

To make life better for them, the Government also plans to put 12 billion yuan into helping the poor this year.

The Government also plans to help farmers find jobs in cities by teaching them new skills (技能).

The hope is that one day, no one will have to worry about where to work or where the next meal will come from.
