吃葡萄,看彩车,做玩偶,世界各国庆祝新年大不同!

Ball drop and Rose Parade

IN New York city, on New Year's Eve, thousands of people watch a crystal (水晶的) ball drop in Times Square. The ball is put on the top of a 23-metre pole (柱子). At the last ten seconds of the old year, with people counting down "ten, nine, eight, seven...", the ball is slowly lowered down the pole. At 12:00 am, the ball hits the bottom (底部) of the pole. People cheer and hug each other to celebrate the incoming year.

On New Year's Day, tens of thousands of Americans enjoy the Rose Parade (游行). The parade has been held every year in Pasadena, California since 1890.

The parade has many beautiful floats (彩车) covered in flowers. Every float is a different character, some with animals and cartoon figures (形象). Bands follow the parade and play music.

Burning the past

Burning "Mr Old Year" is a New Year's tradition (传统) in some cities in Colombia, South America. Families make a big doll that stands for the old year. They put things that they don't want anymore in it. Then at midnight on New Year's Eve, they set the doll on fire. This means burning the past and getting ready to start a happy new year.

The 12 grapes

Spanish celebrate the new year by eating 12 grapes. Everybody has to prepare 12 grapes when the clock starts to chime (敲响). When it is midnight, each time the clock chimes, they put a grape in their mouth. By the time the clock has finished chiming, everybody has to have finished their grapes and the new year starts.

The tradition started because once the King of Spain gave everyone grapes to eat after a big harvest.

Water to celebrate

Thailand has its special new year's date, which is different from our calendar. The Thai new year, or Songkran Day, is celebrated on April 13. Thais play with water, pouring (泼) and splashing (喷洒) it on each other. At the same time, they wish for happiness and good luck.

Eggs have a say

Iranian's new year, No Ruz, lasts 13 days. It is celebrated in March. People eat a special meal of eggs and pilaf (肉饭). This meal is believed to bring good luck. Friends get together and watch for special things to happen at midnight. For example, someone will place eggs on a mirror. They believe the new year starts when the eggs begin to shake (震动).

Your turn: creative writing

Compared with the above foreign customs, how do we Chinese celebrate New Year's Day? Do we have special food on that day? Write a short passage to explain.

What are you going to do in 2007? How are you going to make your resolution work? Write about the new year's resolution and what you are going to do.
