白天犯困,错在基因?

NO matter how little they sleep, some people can work efficiently (高效地) while others will yawn and struggle through the day. A new study from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, US, has found that the reason could be in our genes.

Researchers found that people with a genetic variant (基因变种), called DQB1*0602 are generally more sleepy than those without it. About 25 percent of the general public has the genetic variant, but only a small percentage of that 25 percent actually suffers from sleep problems.

In the study, 92 healthy adults without the gene variant were compared to 37 healthy adults who had the gene variant but did not have any sleep problems. In the sleep lab, all of them had 10 hours of sleep for the first two nights. Over the following five nights, they got only four hours of sleep – clearly, not enough.

The result was, whether they got enough sleep or not, people with the DQB1*0602 were sleepier and more tired than the people without it. People with the gene variant also spent less time in deep sleep, and woke up more times during their sleep compared to the participants without the gene.

“When the genetic variant people were fully rested, they still rated (认为) themselves sleepy,” Namni Goel told Neurology, who is lead author of the study and assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

These people had “a lower drive to sleep” when challenged by sleep loss, according to Geol, and normally they had “a more fragmented (破碎的) sleep with more arousals (wake-ups)” than those who didn’t carry the gene.

Mark Mahowald, medical director of an American Sleep Disorders (紊乱) Center, said that the study results are important because people are always criticizing those who tend to (往往) be more sleepy in daytime.

“The implication (含意) is that everyone is sleep-deprived (缺觉的) and sleep-deprivation does the same thing to everyone, but the tolerance and range of sleep is so different for different people,” Mahowald told Abcnews.go.com.

Mahowald also notices that our society has regarded “sleepiness as a kind of weakness of character”. He suggests that we should accept the fact that our genes decide how long we sleep and is not a sign of weakness.
