WE take the computer mouse for granted these days, barely even thinking about it. But the little plastic computer tool, which makes using our PCs and laptops so convenient, has a history that goes back nearly 50 years.

In 1963, with the help of a colleague, American inventor and early computer pioneer Douglas Engelbart at the then Stanford Research Institute invented a prototype (原型) mouse. Later, Engelbart developed its structure. On April 27, 1981, the first computer system with a mouse and windows interface (界面) appeared. It dominates (占统治地位) the personal computing world today.

Despite speculation that developments like the touch screen iPad will mean the end of the mouse, it seems likely that it will be around for a lot longer.

“The mouse was creative because it was aimed not at experts, but at beginners,” Ken Perlin, a professor at the New York University Media Research Lab, told the Innovation News Daily.?

“Ease of learning, simplicity (简单) of use and the fact that you don’t need to take your eyes off the screen to use it, are also the reasons for its long life,” Perlin said.

The invention of the mouse was a beginning of a new age. Before the mouse computer users had to use complex tools and confusing code (代码) words to interface (通过界面连接) with their computers. The mouse turned the computer into a visual device – and that made everything a lot easier.

The mouse has faced challenges but adapted. It has survived because it is an almost perfect fit for the digital world. In fact, computer scientists began to design their products to fit in with the mouse.

Scientists have been working on adding new features to the mouse. Recently, a “soft mouse” made from a soft plastic material has appeared. Using it can seem like petting (爱抚) a cat, hence some computer users have started calling it a cat. There is an Internet saying: One day the “cat” may eat the “mouse”. 21ST
