THE first group of young explorers had arrived back at Resolute because Saskia Bauer’s eyes had to be treated. But we still had the rest of our journey to face. A snowstorm approached. We were stuck in our tent and had to wait for the storm to pass. We decided to head off north and to face the challenge of covering 95 kilometers in just three days. We had to give it a try because we had come to the Arctic sea ice to learn how to fight for our goals in life.
We completed 34 kilometers in 12 hours of skiing, the longest day of the expedition. We saw a great variety of terrains (地形), from flat icy plains, to pack ice to open water.
We set up camp just in front of the open water, hoping that during the night it would freeze over so that we could ski over it the next day. Just as we were speaking about it, it happened! Just two hours later an ice wall two meters in height formed by our tents. That night, we slept in our outer shells, ready to move the tent in case the ice packed beneath (在……之下) us.
We woke at 4 am and set off just an hour later. We were ready for another long day of skiing. But Mother Nature has her own plans. Not long after we had started we ran into a big obstacle (障碍): a thin ice area.
At the moment when the ice beneath our skis began to move, I understood the dangers of the Arctic sea ice. Any second the thin ice beneath my skis could have split (裂开) apart and drowned me in 4,000 meters of sea.
Now, sitting in the warm and safe tent, I am convinced that we made a wise decision to turn back south. We have reached 79 degrees and 30 minutes North, the furthest north reached by any expedition from Canada this year.
