CHEN Xida from Xiamen, Fujian province has traveled in Taiwan three times, but always with tour groups, so far the only way for mainland tourists to visit the island.
“The schedule (行程) was so tight that I could neither sample the delicious food, nor really enjoy the beautiful sights there,” the 40-year-old company clerk complained.?
“But I’m happy to hear that individual tours to Taiwan will begin soon. I am going to take my family there again this year for some ‘deep travel’. I want to see whatever I like and go wherever I want,” Chen said.”
Chen is talking about the pilot (试点) travel program that will allow mainlanders to visit Taiwan as individual tourists starting June 28.
Wang Yi, director of the State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office, announced the policy at the weeklong Straits Forum (海峡论坛) in Xiamen on June 11.
According to Wang, the first phase (阶段) of the program will apply to residents (居民) in Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen. Fujian residents will also be allowed to travel individually to Jinmen, Matsu and Penghu.
The decision came three years after officials in Taiwan lifted a ban on mainlanders traveling to Taiwan in July 2008.
Since then, tourism between the mainland and Taiwan has increased significantly. Statistics show that mainlanders made 930,000 trips to Taiwan in 2009 and 1.63 million in 2010. The number is expected to go over 2 million this year due to individual tourists, according to Xinhua News Agency.
“We have been receiving a large number of inquiries (咨询) since the news came out that individuals could travel,” Ge Lei from China Youth Travel Agency, told China Daily.
Ge added that Taiwan will possibly overtake Japan as the third most popular tourist destination in Asia for mainland travelers, after Hong Kong and Singapore.
The agency is now receiving orders for individual trips to Taiwan, but the cost will probably be 50 percent higher than on a group tour.
Taiwan media reported that daily individual tourists to the island might be limited to 500. The visits would bring 15 billion New Taiwan dollars (3 billion yuan) a year to the economy.
Future tourists from the mainland are already getting special offers. During the forum, Tsai Ping-kun, vice-mayor of Taichung, the island’s third-largest city, introduced specialty products (特色产品) and tourist sites.
“We are going to launch a travel route (路线) that will cover all the important tourist sites so that mainland travelers will be able fully to enjoy Taiwan’s scenery,” Tsai said.
“We shall also have preferential (特惠的) policies – 50 percent discounts (折扣)” for the first 1,000 travelers from the mainland, he added.
