[初二]Born to be wild
作者:21ST    来源:21世纪学生英文报·初二版第349期    日期: 2011-07-19

失去父母的小象在科学家的帮助下重回大自然。

Kenyan elephant expert Dame Daphne Sheldrick has done a great job protecting and returning orphaned (孤儿的) elephant babies to the wild. Since 1977, Sheldrick and her team at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust have saved and raised more than 130 orphaned elephant babies in Nairobi, Kenya.

Question: If you had grown up anywhere other than Kenya, do you think you would have the same passion (激情) for wildlife?

Sheldrick: Definitely (绝对地).

I love all animals.

Question: Can you describe your first interaction (互动) with an elephant?

Sheldrick: My first close-up interaction with elephants was with my husband’s first two orphans, Samson and Fatuma. I came to love and understand those orphans, and appreciate the intelligence (智力) of elephants.

Question: What was your reason for building the orphanage (孤儿院)?

Sheldrick: The idea of setting up the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was based on the love of my husband’s many friends and admirers worldwide. David was, at the time, the finest wildlife warden (看守人) in Africa... After my husband died there were many orphaned elephant babies that needed to be rescued (被拯救). There was no one other than myself who had experience in raising elephant babies, so I came to help. That is how it all began.

Question: Do the animals ever come back to visit after they’ve been sent to the wild?

Sheldrick: The orphans often come back to see their human family and the other orphans... Elephants never forget. They regard all of the orphans as part of a family. They recognize (认可) and love their human family (their keepers) for life. Elephants are just like us humans – only better!

Question: What can children do to raise awareness (意识) of the need to protect endangered wildlife?

Sheldrick: Children can raise funds (基金) to help those working with animals. They can have respect for nature and wildlife. Children must be able to appreciate beauty and celebrate the beautiful world in which we live.
