HUMAN beings' early homes were caves (洞穴). They protected people from animals and kept them warm. As time went on, human homes were thatched huts (茅棚), then wooden ones, then brick, concrete (混凝土), steel (钢) and glass buildings. Now in the information age, scientists can build smart houses with the help of computer systems. But how smart can a house be? Teens shows you a house based on the ideas of the world's top computer engineers.

Ken Sakamura

Ken Sakamura (坂村健) is the most famous computer architect (工程师) in Japan. He is 57 years old and works at Tokyo University. He is the father of the "Everywhere Computing" idea. Sakamura created the computer operating system to help people in their daily lives.

In 1988, Ken Sakamura started to work on the "smart house" idea, which cost of a billion (十亿) yen (日元). The house is 370 square (平方) meters, and has 380 computers.

Bill Gates

Bill Gates is one of the most famous people in the world. He is cofounder (共同创建者) of Microsoft, one of the biggest brands (品牌) in the computer industry. Nearly every computer uses Microsoft software (软件). According to Forbes (《福布斯》) magazine, Bill Gates was the richest man in the world.

In 1988, Gates bought some land for $2 million and started to build his smart home. Seven years later, a building of 4,600 square meters was completed. People say that there're about 53 miles of cable (电缆) in the house.

When the owner pushes the "rest" button before going to bed, a warning system immediately starts working. If there's an accident like a fire or an earthquake, the system sends out 'help' signals. While help is coming, the system shows the shortest and safest way out of the building.

Most of us have a schedule. We do different things on different days on the week. Say (比如) on Wednesday you do PE. The computerized wardrobe in the bedroom can help. When you get up in the morning it will have your PE kit ready for you.

The kitchen in the smart house has some surprises, too. The computer system knows all kinds of recipes. It can cook a spicy (辛辣的) Chinese dish or an Italian pasta (面食) dish. What if you want pizza but your mom would prefer a Sichuan dish? No worries. The computer has it under control! It can make them with the help of a preset (预设的) program. And if you want to cook it yourself, it has videos to teach you, step by step.

The refrigerator in the smart house can talk through a screen. The screen tells people what is fresh and what is on the turn in the refrigerator.

If you want to take a bath after playing basketball, you can send a message to the system with your cellphone on the way home. The bathtub fills up to the right depth (深度), with the water just at the right temperature.

The toilet is automatic (自动的) too. The computer does everything from raising the lid (盖) to washing your hands. The system is able to give you a physical examination based on your urine (尿) and blood pressure. If the data are not OK, the system advises you to see a doctor.

Lights come on when you go in. Speakers hidden behind the wallpaper allow music to follow you from room to room. People carry touch pads (触摸垫) around with them. These can control everything from the TVs to the temperature and the lights, which brighten or dim (变暗) to match the light outdoors.

The gate

A smart house is first of all safe. Video cams (摄像头) and monitors (监控器) at the gate read the visitor's face. If it's a new face, the door doesn't open until the owner welcomes the visitor.

Outside plants

The computer system knows how to take care of plants. It watches the grass and the flowers. When the plants need watering, the computer turns the watering system on.

The floor

The floor can feel different pressures. Family members know who is at home just by the weight of someone's footsteps.
