How is the book so inspiring? It describes two African-American men with many similarities but who end up differently because of the different choices they make. 4. What do students do in RISE? Students meet every week, hosting African-American guest speakers, and going on field trips as well as college tours. 5. Why are African-American guest speakers often invited to the club? The club is especially aimed at African-American students, who were the lowest-achieving group.

IV. Structure1. JOSH Amoako says… he preferred sleeping to paying attention in class. prefer doing sth to doing sth 比起……更喜欢…… 我觉得周末在家里比出去好。 On weekends I prefer staying at home to going out. prefer to do sth rather than do sth 她宁愿给他写信也不愿给他打电话。 She preferred to write to him rather than telephone him. 2. Josh’s friend and classmate Dre Goode-Legette also remembers being lazy in middle school. remember doing sth 记得做过某事 我记得我走的时候锁门了。 I remember locking the door when I left. remember to do sth 记得去做某事(还没做) 在你离开房间之前,记得把灯关了. Remember to turn off the lights when you leave the room. 3. He had cleaned up his act a bit by the time he got to high school. By the time 到……时,主句的动词应当用完成时态。 在我们到达车站时,汽车早就开走了。 By the time I got to the bus station, the bus had left. 4. The book explores the choices the two men made that shaped their respective lives. 本句中两个并列的定语从句the two men made和that shaped their respective lives修饰先行名词the choices。 5. Just 21.8 percent of black male students in North Carolina were scored “proficient” on tests in English, math and biology. 当百分数,分数后面加名词或代词时,要根据这个名词或代词来决定其谓语动词的单复数形式。如果是复数名词或代词,谓语动词用复数,如本句中的情况;如果是单数名词(或不可数名词)或代词,谓语动词用单数,如:Three-fourths of the surface of the earth is covered by water.
