I. Warming up   

1. Do you often download movies from the 

Internet?

2. How long does it usually take you to download a movie?

3. Are you satisfied with your Internet speed?

II. Skimming 

Look through the passage and decide what the main idea of each part is.

Part 1 (1-2): 

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will  lower mobile Internet data fees and improve infrastructure. 

Part 2 (3-6):

What people are not satisfied with.

Part 3 (7-9):

The reasons why China faces such problems with its Internet services.

Part 4 (10-11): 

How to turn around the situation. 

III. Scanning 

Read the passage again and answer the following questions.

1. Why aren’t people satisfied with China’s Internet?

China’s Internet connection speed is behind that of many countries.

The slow Internet service in China costs a lot.

2. Why is it difficult for China to improve its infrastructure?

It’s expensive to put in and maintain fiber networks, through which light sends text, music and video globally in less than a second. It is also difficult for China to cover its 9.6 million square kilometers of land with fiber networks. 

3. What is the result of a monopoly (垄断)? 

There isn’t much competition in the market to lower prices.

IV. Sentence structure

Read the sentences and pay attention to their structure.

1. In fact, China’s Internet connection speed is behind that of many countries. 

that 用来指代“同名异物”的可数名词单数或不可数名词。此处指代前面的“China’s Internet connection speed ”。

E.g. His personality is more outgoing than that of his brother.

解析:答案为C。that 指代前面所提到的the English。

2. It means that you can download a 1 GB movie within 6 minutes in South Korea, while in China it would take half an hour.

For instance, China Mobile Guangdong charges people 388 yuan for a package with 6 GB of mobile Internet data, while in Japan, mobile operator (运营商) NTT Docomo gives users unlimited mobile data and telephone calls for 5,900 yen (306 yuan) a month.

while 在两个句子中都是用来表“对比”的。

V. Vocabulary

IV. Structure

Look at the sentences and pay attention to their structure.

伴随状语

Somebody standing too close may make you “focus less on what somebody is saying than on how close they are to you”. 

后置定语

Being a British person around people from other countries can therefore be full of problems. 

主语

Giving advice on how to behave around a British person, Debrett’s says that “if you can feel the warmth of their worried breath upon your face, then you’re standing too close”. 

时间状语

Translate these sentences.

I. Pre-reading

If you wanted your mother to make some changes, how would you encourage her to make them?

II. Scanning:

1. How did the writer find her rehearsal?

She thought her act was “lame”.

2. Why did her mother stop painting after her 30s?

Because she was too busy with housework.

3. What was the author’s attitude toward her mother giving up painting? Why did she give her mother sketchbooks as gifts?

She was sad about it and she wanted to encourage her mother to start painting again. 

4. Why did the writer say “my stomach dropped” after she finished her performance?

Because she had criticized/chastised her mother in public and felt worried.

5. Why did the writer press her face to her mother’s shoulder?

Because she didn’t want to know whether her mother was in tears.

III. Structure

1. I squinted (眯着眼看), looking for my parents, but I couldn’t pick out their faces. 

句子仿写:
