I. Warming up   

1. Boys, have you ever heard somebody tease you with the phrase “like a girl”?

2. Girls, what is your response when you hear the phrase “like a girl”?   

II. Skimming 

Look through the passage and find its main idea.

.People are starting to think about the phrase “like a girl” a little differently. 

III. Scanning 

Read the passage again and answer the following questions.

1. What is one achievement that has made people change their attitudes to the phrase “like a girl”?

Serena Williams winning her 21st Grand Slam tennis title.  

2. Will women’s amazing achievements have a lasting impact on the sports world?

Yes. 

3. Why does Nazareth Academy think women’s sports are more interesting?

Women’s style of play is so much more skillful because they are playing more as a team instead of as individuals.

IV. Sentence structure

Read the sentences and pay attention to their structure.

1. The US women’s national soccer team won the World Cup, making the US proud.  

making the US proud 为现在分词短语做结果状语。

Eg. The snow lasted a week, resulting in a serious traffic problem in the whole area. 

V. Vocabulary

1. But now, due to the success of female athletes in the US, people are starting to think about the phrase a little differently. 

due to 因为 

Joe’s application to the University was not accepted 

due to his poor grade in English.

乔因英语不及格申报那所大学没被录取.

2. But will these amazing achievements have a lasting impact on the sports world?

have a lasting impact on 对……有持久影响

Eg. The volunteers’ work will have a lasting impact on the environment. 

3. Sports fans might be catching on to this idea.

catch on (to): begin to understand or realize something

Eg.  It was a long time before the police caught on to what he was really doing. 过了很久,警方才明白过来他究竟在干什么。

4. It may take time before women’s sports get more attention, but ...

before: used to say that something happens after a period of time  ……之后才。

Eg. It was several minutes before we realized what was happening. 几分钟之后我们才明白发生了什么事。

VI. Discussion

Do you think women are playing a more and more important role in society?

Can you list some examples of women playing a more important role?  

 

Dangers of eating on the go (P5)

I. Warming up   

1. Do you usually have enough time to have breakfast? 

2. What do you do when you are in a rush, grab a quick bite to eat, or skip breakfast?

II. Skimming 

Look through the passage and find its main idea.

The habit of eating on the go could be bad for your waist.

III. Scanning 

Read the passage again and answer the following questions.

1. What was the result of the experiment?

Those who ate while walking around the hall ate more snacks later.

2. Why might eating on the go make dieters eat too much later on in the day?  

1)Walking is a powerful distraction (令人分心的事物), which could confuse people’s feeling of hunger. 

2)People think of walking as exercise and eat too much later to reward themselves. 

3. What is Lori Rosenthal’s suggestion?

People should practice mindful eating – being aware of why, what, where and how much they eat.

4. How can we practice mindful eating?

Slow down and pay attention so we are able to tell when we are beginning to get full and stop before eating too much.

IV. Sentence structure

1. Watch out if this has become your daily routine, as new research suggests that the habit of eating on the go could be bad for your waist.

I. Warming up:

What do you do if you are in a bad mood?

Examples:

Take a shower

Look at yourself in the mirror

Eat something with sugar in it

Turn your music up

Smile!

II. Skimming

Read the title & the first two paragraphs and guess why the passage was written.

To use a story to tell us how to cheer ourselves up.

III. Scanning

1. What does the writer want to tell us by mentioning bears in the first paragraph?

He was in a bad mood and he envies bears that can sleep through the worst part of the year and wake up when spring comes.

2. How did the coworker treat a certain person badly? Who do you think the certain person was?

The certain person was actually himself. He told himself that he did not like anything about himself, he didn’t take good care of himself, and he even wanted to get rid of himself.

3. What kind of a person did the coworker find in the mirror that day?

He saw that everything was wrong with him: he was tired, overweight and depressed.

4. What did the coworker tell the man that day?

He told him that he was actually was a good person.

5. What is the coworker like now?

He is full of positive energy, in good shape, and always ready to encourage others.

IV. Language points:

1. “Want some words of affirmation (肯定)?” a coworker, seeing my mood, kindly suggested.” 

动词现在分词作状语,表示原因。例如:

Being ill,he couldn’t go to work.

Knowing all this, the guard did not let me in.

2. So I told the man (I had disliked for so many years 定语从句)that he was a good person after all.”

句子主干:I told the man that he was a good person after all.

V. Discussion:

After reading the passage, what do you think you will do now when you are in a bad mood?
