II. Fast reading
Read the passage and answer the questions
1. What are the characteristics of Muslims in Josh’s mind?
1) They fast for Ramadan;
2) They are terrorists;
3) They wear towels on their heads.
2. How were the scenes performed in Connecticut written? What were the 13 scenes focused on?
They had been written by students based on their own experiences. They focused on racism (种族主义), suicide (自杀) and other teenage problems.
3. How can we say the training has been successful? Who has been moved by the performances?
The audience have been able to relate to the performers. And both the performers and the audience have been moved.

Are you familiar with these actors and actresses? Which TV series are they famous for?
Have you finished watching the first eight seasons of The Big Bang Theory? What do you expect in the ninth season?

2. In which ways can we say that the characters’ lives are similar to ours?
1) The characters love the same entertainment that the viewers do.
2) They don’t just talk about pop culture; each of the characters also has some real human qualities.
3. According to the article, what in the show is likely to keep viewers’ interest?
The slow, but important, emotional growth of the characters is likely to keep viewers’ interest.
IV. Sentence structure
1. You won’t have anyone to tell you what it’s like.
该句中的to tell you what it’s like做定语,修饰anyone;what引导的从句做tell的宾语。
2. Talking about social class helps first-generation students to understand how their own backgrounds matter in college, what unique difficulties they may face, and see that people like them can be successful.
Talking about social class是动名词做主语;其余
部分为help ---to understand --- and see ---.
3. This is the age of the geek and The Big Bang Theory’s popularity shows a massive cultural change in which we’re celebrating the brainy, the intellectual and the different – instead of making them outcasts.
句子中 in which引导的是定语从句。“介词+关系代词”,指人时用“介词+whom”; 指物时用“介词+which”。

4. While the show seems to be about geniuses (天才), their lives are still similar to ours. Being a geek means knowing about fantasy and sci-fi entertainment.
While 引导的是让步状语从句。
While the Internet is of great help, I don’t think it’s a good idea to spend too much time on it. (高考) 
While I accept that he is not perfect, I do actually like him. (高考) 
比较本文中另一个句子:
Leonard fears that he can’t live up to his parents’ expectations, while Sheldon finds it difficult to connect to others around him.
While 是并列连词,表对比“而,然而”。
I’d like to study law at university while my cousin would prefer to study geography. (高考)
5. Viewers are happy that the show’s characters love the same entertainment that they do.
先行词由the same 修饰时,定语从句由that或者as引导。
一般认为the same as 和 the same that的区别就在于:as是表示相似,而that则表示同一。
This is the same bag as the one I lost yesterday.
这个书包和我昨天丢失的相似。
This is the same bag that I lost yesterday.
这正是我昨天丢失的书包。
