I. Warming up  
What is your lucky color?
Do you think there is a lucky color in Britain? What do you think it is?
II. Skimming
Read the passage and decide what the main idea of the passage is.
British culture is full of the color red.
III. Scanning
1. What things are red or related to red in British culture?
Red postboxes on street corners and on the sides of buildings;
The British red phone box;
The famous double-decker (双层)
Red clothes worn by British soldiers in battle;
Red in the UK’s Union Jack national flag.
A famous team of stunt (特技) jet fighters (喷气式战斗机) called “The Red Arrows”.
2. List some red animals that can be found in British nature.
The robin (知更鸟), which has a bright red breast
The red squirrel (松鼠)
Foxes
3. In what way can people find out how a culture looks at a color?
By looking at the way it uses it in language. 
4. Do you know the meaning of the expressions “sees red”, “red-faced”, “in the red”?
sees red: gets angry.
red-faced: out of breath or blushing
in the red: in debt 
IV. Sentence structure
1. Go to Britain and you will see red everywhere.
Look hard enough and you’ll find the color red being used in all countries.
祈使句,+ and + 陈述句: 在这里祈使句相当于if 引导的条件状语从句(但此时去掉and)。
还可以用简短的形式表示,即省略动词。
Give me one more hour and I’ll get the work finished.(祈使句)
= If you give me one more hour, I’ll get the work finished.(if条件句)
= If I am given one more hour, I’ll get the work finished.
= One more hour and I’ll get the work finished.(名词短语)
= Given one more hour, I’ll get the work finished.
2. But whether the British realize it or not, red is everywhere in Britain.
Whether 引导的是让步状语从句。
We'll get on with the work, whether we can find the necessary tools or not.
不管我们能否找到所需的工具,我们要把这件工作做下去。
Whether she wins or loses, this is her last chance.

V. Vocabulary

What do you think it was used for in ancient times?

III. Detailed reading:
1. How have some experts explained Stonehenge?
Experts have said at different times that it was a temple, a calendar, or a graveyard.
2. What is the new theory put forward by Spalding?
In ancient times, spiritual ceremonies didn’t happen on the ground. In this way, they could get closer to the heavens. So the rituals at Stonehenge were performed not among the stones, but on top of them.
3. How did Spalding support his theory?
He listed examples from ancient civilizations worldwide. He also said the wood that would have been used for the platform had long since rotted away, leaving only the stone pillars that supported it behind.
4. What are other scholars’ attitude towards this new theory?
They have a fair degree of skepticism about the theory, saying there are a large number of stone circles around the country which didn’t have a platform on top.

I. Warming up  
Expressions in the passage:
fail out of college: 因不及格从大学退学
golden child: 金童子,指优秀的孩子
graduate school:研究生院
secondary school: 中学
graduate student:研究生,毕业生
GRE: abbr. 美国研究生入学考试(Graduate Record Examination)
prep course: 预备课 
We are often faced with difficulties in our school life. How do you usually get through hard times?
II. Skimming
What does the title “Saying no to ‘no’” mean?
Faced with obstacles, the writer didn’t give up but persisted until she had achieved her goal. 
1. How did the writer want to prove herself?
She wanted to attend Columbia University for graduate school and prepared for a career in children’s media.
2. Why did the writer reconsider her plan to take the GRE?
Because she realized that the course would be too difficult for her.
3. What did she do after giving up on the GRE? And why?
She got a job working on a project sponsored by the dean’s office on campus and enrolled in a class.
To become a top student in the class while working on campus and get letters of recommendation from her boss and her professor, which would be helpful for her application.
4. Why did her professor say no? What did the writer do in the end?
Because the professor did not know her well enough and the semester was not finished.
She didn’t take no for an answer. She managed to ask the professor to write a short note unofficially supporting her application. 
IV. Vocabulary
1. So when I decided that I wanted to attend Columbia University for graduate school, I was sure it would be close to impossible.
close to : 接近;几乎;差不多
We live close to the school.
Most have either met their targets or are close to doing so.
But close to half a million confirmed cases have been reported to the World Health Organization.
2. So I enrolled (报名) in a GRE test prep course and threw myself into the class.
Enroll in:登记,报名参加 ,或者:enroll oneself in
She enrolled in college yesterday.
throw oneself into: 使全身心地投入
I am preparing to throw myself into the creation of public art, hoping to bring my art to the world.
3. With finals approaching, I felt confident I would get an “A” in the course, so it was time for step two.  
with finals approaching为with复合结构:
with + n. / pron. + doing
With 复合结构归纳:
1.“with+名词/代词+介词短语”
He was walking down the street with a book under his arm.

With the weather looking so nice, we decided to play basketball.
3. “with+名词/代词+副词”
The square looks more beautiful with all the lights on.

With the problem finally solved, we relaxed.

He felt uneasy with the whole class staring at him.

With nothing to do that afternoon, I went to a bookshop.

The question can be broken down into two parts.

These rules tell us how a sentence is broken down into phrases.
