What do you know about the Notting Hill Carnival?
Background
The Notting Hill Carnival is an annual event that takes place every August since 1966 on the streets of Notting Hill, London. It attracts about one million people every year, making it one of the world’s largest street festivals and a significant event in British culture.
II. Fast reading
What is the main question the passage asks?
Is it appropriate to spend the weekend dancing in the streets without a care in the world?
III. Careful reading
1. When did it take place this year?
2. How many people attended the carnival when it started in 1966?
3. Who is Patrick Bullock? What is his opinion of whether or not it is appropriate to celebrate the festival in these troubled times?
4. What is your opinion?
1. August 28-29.
2. About 1,000.
3. He is an artist who builds floats for the parade each year. He thinks the spirit of the carnival cannot be broken.

The plants growing in the desert may help the world a lot.

Read the passage and answer the following questions.
1. Why are scientists still studying the plant, even if it is dangerous to eat it?
Because the scientists can study how it absorbs carbon dioxide at night and why it is so good at living in the desert. This will help people in the future grow food on land that we currently find it hard to grow on.
2. How can people use the genes from the plant?
People can use the genes from this plant and put them into food plants like beans or cereals, which can make the food plants grow in the desert.
3. Why should we use this type of plant for fuel?
This type of plant grows in the desert. If we could use it for fuel, we would have more good land to grow food on.

He thinks that the world would be a better place if people could learn to trust each other.

Read the passage and answer the following questions.
1. Why does the author say that the young man lived by a totally different set of rules?
Because the young man just stood near the pedestrian crossing selling toys and trinkets without approaching the pedestrians.
2. How did the young man get the correct money from the customers?
The customers put the money in the bag hanging around his neck and took out whatever change he owed them.
3. Why did the young man let the customers do so?
He trusted the customers.
IV. Sentence structure
1. I realized that we all live in a world where mutual trust is in short supply.
句中,where引导的是定语从句,修饰先行词world。注意:当先行词在定语从句中做地点状语时,定语从句应由关系副词where引导。例如:
He wished he hadn’t moved to a city where crime was high.
This is the place where Lu Xun once lived.
2. I was walking along a busy road and noticed a young man standing near the pedestrian crossing selling toys and trinkets.
I walked on hoping that two people would have a smile on their face that day.
两个句中,selling和hoping that都是现在分词短语,在句子中做伴随状语。
V. Vocabulary
1. I was so touched by how this young blind man trusted people that I bought a toy from him that I did not need.
touch:  触动;感动
e.g. It has touched me deeply to see how these people live.
看到这些人的生活境况,我深受触动。
2. I put my hand in but did not take any change.
change 此处为不可数名词:零钱
e.g.

- Thank you very much.
