Who is Bob Dylan?
Bob Dylan is an American songwriter, singer, artist, and writer. He has been influential in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when his songs reflected social changes. Leaving behind his place in the American folk music revival, his six-minute single Like a Rolling Stone, recorded in 1965, added to the world of popular music.
Since 1994, Dylan has published six books of drawings and paintings, and his work has been exhibited in major art galleries. As a musician, Dylan has sold more than 100 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time.

It is a brief introduction of the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature winner Bob Dylan and an explanation of why he deserves the prize.

1. Why was the Nobel Prize in literature given to Bob Dylan, according to the academy?
Because he has created a new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition. 
2. What was a feature of Dylan’s music and lyrics during the 1960s?
Dylan’s music and lyrics spoke to a generation of people during the 1960s. And his lyrics were often about great political issues.

Dylan prefers folk music because it reflects life on a much deeper level. Which kind of music do you like? Why? Have a discussion with your group members about this topic and share some of your favorite music with the others in your group.

Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize in literature in 2016 as a singer, while Mo Yan won it in 2012 as a writer. Of all the writers or singers you know, who do you think is the best? Why? Try to share the reasons why you prefer a particular writer or singer with the other members of your group.

•What happened to the writer’s family?
•The writer’s dad became ill and was soon out of a job. The family had no money to buy food, coal etc. 
•What did the writer and his brother do to help their family?
•They gathered coal that fell from the coal cars along the railroad tracks (轨道) near their home after school. 
•Why did the fireman ask the boys to stay away from the trains? 
•Because standing near them was really dangerous for two little kids.  
•What did the fireman do to help the family?
•He gave the family coal, food and sometimes money three days a week all that winter.
