Showing Earth’s Beauty (P1)

I. Warming up
What do you know about our planet, Earth? How many species are there? What is your favorite species?

II. Pre-reading
Have you seen BBC’s wildlife documentary Planet Earth or Planet Earth II? Do you like it?

III. Reading
Read the article, and try to answer the following question:
What is the main purpose of the article?
It gives readers a brief introduction to the BBC wildlife documentary Planet Earth II.

Try to answer the following questions:
1. When was Planet Earth first shown on television?
Planet Earth was first shown on TV 10 years ago, in 2006.
2. When did Planet Earth II come out?
Planet Earth II came out on Nov 6, 2016.
3. How many new technologies are mentioned in this article? What are they? How did they work when Planet Earth II was filmed?
Two new technologies are mentioned, respectively: drones and “camera traps”. With drones, hard-to-get images such as those of dangerous animals can be filmed, and cameras can be taken to places where helicopters cannot fly. “Camera traps” that turn on only when there are animals around helped to get close-up shots of elusive animals.
4. What it the difference between Planet Earth and Planet Earth II, according to Mike Gunton?
Planet Earth took an almost god-like view; people looked down on Earth and saw the size of the planet. Planet Earth II gets people into the lives of the animals, and people see the size of the planet through their own eyes.
5. Do audiences like Planet Earth II ?
Yes, they do.

Try to judge whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F) according to the article you have read:
1. Planet Earth II is just a sequel to 2006’s Planet Earth.
2. Technology now allows us to get much closer to animals than ever before.
3. In Planet Earth II, ultra high definition cameras are used to get better images than ever.
4. The ultra high-definition cameras were put on helicopters to film hard-to-get images.
5.  Helicopters can take cameras to places where drones cannot fly.
6.  “Camera traps” turn on all the time, no matter if there are animals around or not.
7.  “Camera traps” helped to get close-up shots of elusive animals like lizards, which are difficult to film.
8.  Planet Earth II got an almost-perfect score of 9.9 on IMDb.

Learn from cartoon (P4-5)

I. Warming up
Do you like watching cartoons? Take a look at the following pictures of cartoons and see whether you have watched them!

•What is your favorite cartoon, and why do you like it?
•Do you think people can learn anything from cartoons?

II. Skimming
What is the article mainly about?
It describes a university course that uses The Simpsons to teach philosophy and explores the reasons behind the course being started.

III. Scanning
1. What is The Simpsons mainly about?
The show tells the story of the Simpson family. The father, Homer, works in a nuclear power plant as a safety advisor. The mother, Marge, stays at home to take care of the family’s home and their children Bart, Lisa and Maggie.

From left to right: Bart, Marge, Santa’s Little Helper (dog), Maggie, Homer, Lisa and Snowball II (cat).

2. Why is The Simpsons a great part of the modern world’s culture?
It is great partly because it is full of philosophy.

3. What is the aim of the course? Do you think the teacher will achieve his aim?
•It aims to introduce students to the heavy topic of philosophy while having a bit of fun.

IV. Language focus - vocabulary
Match the words with their definitions.

IV. Language focus - sentence structure
Translate the sentences
1. “Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx, Albert Camus and many other great thinkers’ ideas are shown in what could be the purest form of philosophy – the cartoon comedy (喜剧).”

2. The cartoon world is really a philosophical one because to work it needs to show reality by getting away from it … then showing it back to us, bringing it to us more clearly than realist fiction can.
Note: because引导了原因状语从句,bringing it…

3. Homer Simpson in particular is often talked about, with many comparing his character to the ideal standards of Aristotle, who thought that we should be virtuous
Note: with many comparing… Aristotle.

4. Homer is not realistic in the way a film or novel character is, but he is recognizable as a kind of regular American.
Note: in the way是方式状语,way后面是一个定语从句,省略了that/ in which

V. Post-reading
Discussion:
1. Which kind of course do you prefer, traditional or untraditional? Give your reasons.
2. Is there a film, TV series or cartoon that has inspired or enlightened you, and what did you learn from it?

Closer to life I wanted (P6)
I. Warming up
1. Do you have a goal? What’s your goal?
2. Why did you set yourself this goal?
3. What did you do to reach your goal?

II. Pre-reading
Looking at the title. Can you predict what the article is mainly about?
²How to set a goal in life
²Ways to reach goals
²The importance of setting a goal in life
²

III. While reading
Read quickly and check your predictions:
1. What’s the article mainly about?
The author’s own experience of reaching his goal of going to Harvard.

Read for detail. Read and draw a mind map with the key information in it.

Read in depth. Read, think and answer the questions.
1.Why did the author describe his living situation in the first paragraph?
Because the author told us it is the author himself who made the goal and tried to reach it in the end, no matter how bad the living situation was.

2. What were the two questions the author asked himself often? Why did he do so?
The two questions were: what did he want in life and were the things he was doing going to get him closer to that life?
By asking himself these two questions, he reminded himself of his goal and urged himself to pursue his goal.

3. What’s the function of the last paragraph?
To make readers think about their own dreams or goals and try to reach them.

IV. Post-reading
Discuss in groups:
lHow do you understand the sentence, “Who you will be tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today”?
lDo you have any experience of trying to reach a goal?
lDo you think it is necessary to set goals in life?
lWhat do you do to reach your goals?

V. Homework
Writing:
Choose one of the following.
1. Write down a short summary of the article based on your mind map, adding what you’ve learned from the story if possible.
2. Based on your group discussion, write about your own experience of trying to reaching a goal. Add some details where necessary.
