I. Leading-in
Do you like reading books in your spare time? Which kind of books do you read more often, physical books or e-books?

II. Skimming
Read the article, divide it into 3 parts and summarize the main idea of each part.

III. Scanning
Read the article and quickly find the answers to the following questions.
1. What does the survey in the UK suggest?
•Physical books are not about to die out and are favored by young people in particular.
•2. What are the reasons why physical books are preferred?
①Physical books are very personal objects to lovers of reading.
②Physical books may carry readers’ precious memories.
③ Readers understand more information from physical books than electronic ones.
3. What does the author think of the future of the two forms of books?
•E-books and physical books are both here to stay.

IV. Language study
1. Translate the sentences. Pay attention to the sentence structure.
1.More surprisingly, it’s young people who are buying the most physical books.
Note:
•It’s…who…

2. It often starts with the way they acquire them.
Note:
•  they acquire them是省略了引导词that/in which的定语从句。

3. Of course, some could say that the devices on which people read e-books, like Kindles and iPads, are also objects that we become fond of.
Note:
•on which…和that we become… 中间的”like Kindles and iPads”是插入语。

4. A Kindle can hold as many pieces of writing as a whole library. But a story we remember from our time turning its pages in our favorite armchair enters our memory forever.
Note:
•we remember…

5. However, there’s no doubt that e-books are here to stay.
Note:
•that…

2. Translate the expressions in red.
1.Ten years ago, many thought that the age of the physical book was coming to an end.
•come to an end: 结束,终止
•bring/ put sth. to an end: 使…结束

2. The objects that had been the companions (伙伴) of millions of readers for hundreds of years were about to die out.
•be about to do: 即将/马上做某事

3. More than 60% of 16-to-24-year-olds preferred print books to e-books.
•More examples with “prefer”:
•I prefer writing a term paper to taking an
exam.
•Their father prefers them to be home early.
•He prefers to try hard rather than give up.
•Please make up your own sentences with these structures!

•4. But it’s also certain that physical books, which have been in production since the fifteenth century, are here to stay, too.
•be in/ out of production
Translation:
•The new model will be in production by the end of the year.
•The car went out of production in 2002.

I have a preference for …, in that …
The reason why I read … is that …
As far as I’m concerned, … outshines …, as…
There are far more advantages of … than….
For instance,…
I’m fond of/keen on/ fascinated by/enjoy reading …
