Read the article carefully and answer the following questions. 
1. When did the author begin to learn Greek? 
She began learning Greek at 10.
2. Did she learn Greek easily?
No. At first it was difficult, then slowly, very slowly, it started to make sense. 
3. What benefits did she gain by learning Greek?
She made friends through languages and it opened up doors for her.
4. What other languages did the author learn?
German and Spanish.
5. Why didn’t the author give up learning German?
She was encouraged by her family to continue on the language path.
6. What did the author learn from her own experiences of learning languages?
She learned that  if she had ignored everybody who encouraged her to study languages, gave up when it was hard and didn’t practice, she would not be doing what she is doing right now.

It’s a pretty well-known fact that it takes two people to make a baby. 
Look at this picture. Can you guess what the relationship between them is?
Actually, the three adults might ALL be the little girl’s biological parents.
II. While reading 
Scanning: 
Read the article and answer the following questions. 
1. Why was this technology developed?
The technique was developed to prevent women from passing on faulty DNA in their mitochondria - the part of the body’s cells that provide energy. 
2. How is a baby made with three parents?
To save children from inheriting the genetic disease, scientists will combine the DNA of three people - the mother, the father and an egg donor. The technique can transfer healthy nuclear DNA from a fertilized egg to a donor egg, separating it from the mother’s disease-causing mitochondrial DNA.
3. Who carried out the first procedure?
The procedure was carried out in Mexico by an American team led by John Zhang of the New Hope Fertility Center in New York. 
4. What were people’s reactions to this technique?
Some critics believe the technique was dangerous, needless and “ethically reckless ”. On the other hand, the science community welcomed the decision.
