Left-handed creativity (P6)
山东烟台二中 李欣桐
I. Lead-in
What do they have in common?
II. Extensive Reading
Are lefties more creative thinkers than right-handers?
III. Intensive Reading
Judge whether the statements are T or F.   Para.1
1. From myths to modern research, the label attached to being left-handed is deniable .
2. Left-handed people, or “lefties” as they are often called, are generally believed to be good at art.
Answer the question.   Para.2
What exactly makes someone left-handed or right-handed?
Our brain is divided into two parts: the left _______, and the right hemisphere. The left hemisphere, linked to ____ and  ______, is responsible for the right side of the body. The right hemisphere, linked to ________and ________, _____ the left side of the body.
This means lefties are controlled by the right side, and __________ more creative thinkers than right-handers. But studies have also ________that lefties aren’t as good as demonstrating (展示) mathematical and problem-solving skills as their right-handed counterparts (同仁).
Answer the question.   Para.4-7
How did the recent study carried out by scientists from the UK and Italy prove the former theory wrong?
The procedure→The result
The procedure:
The study, published on academic website The Conversation, involved more than 2,300 students in Italy aged between 6 and 17 years old. They were asked to complete several mathematical tasks of different skill levels.
The result:
It turned out the left-handers outperformed the others when the tasks involved difficult problem-solving. This pattern was particularly clear in male adolescents.
However, when it came to simple arithmetic (算数), there was no difference between left- and right-handers.
It was also discovered that those who are “severely” right-handed performed less well in all the experiments compared to “moderate (中度的)” right-handers and left-handers.
“Taken together, these findings show that handedness... does influence to some extent,” the study’s authors wrote.
Blank-filling.   Para.8
_________, “handedness is just an indirect expression of brain _____ (功能),” wrote Giovanni Sala, lead author of the study. Sala also _____ that only one third of people with a highly-developed right side of the brain are left-handed. It means that there are lots of right-handed people with a similar brain function as left-handers.
So if you’re a leftie, you might be on your way to becoming a genius, or even the president.
IV. Post-reading
Summarize the language points in the passage and exchange yours with your peers.
