Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions.

Paraphrase the following sentences.
1. Given how fashion works, it’s likely that in another 10 or 20 years, the cycle will have repeated itself again, and what seems to be attractive now will be seen as ugly by then. 
Taking how fashion works into account, maybe after 10 or 20 years, today’s fashionable things will be considered unattractive at that time.
2. Because when it comes to fashion, there’s not much difference between being “old-fashioned” and being “decades ahead of one’s time”.
On the subject of fashion, being “old-fashioned” and being “many years ahead of one’s time”  are almost the same thing.
 
Observe the following sentences. What type of clauses do then include?
1.“Dad shoes” – the colorful and chunky (笨重的) sneakers that look like the ones your dad used to wear – are currently THE big thing in fashion.
2. They are popular items from the 90s that are regaining popularity now.
3. I think it’s very interesting to find this line where ugly becomes beautiful or where beautiful becomes ugly.

Translate the sentences. 
1. “Dad shoes” – the colorful and chunky (笨重的) sneakers that look like the ones your dad used to wear – are currently THE big thing in fashion.
Translation: 爸爸鞋,就是那种彩色的笨重的看起来像是你的爸爸过去穿的那种鞋子,现在是时尚界的热门单品。
2. They are popular items in the 90s that are regaining popularity now.
Translation:他们是90年代的流行单品,现在又重新获得关注。
3. I think it’s very interesting to find this line where ugly becomes beautiful or where beautiful becomes ugly.
Translation:我认为从丑变美或者是从美到丑的界限很有意思。
4. Given how fashion works, it’s likely that in another 10 or 20 years, the cycle will have repeated itself again, and what seems to be attractive now will be seen as ugly by then.

what seems to be attractive now主语从句
句意为:考虑到时尚的运作方式,很可能10年或20年后,这种循环会再次重复,现在看起来很吸引人的物品到那时候可能被视为是丑的了。

1. What is the main idea of the article? 
A recent study showed that people’s faces can reflect their social backgrounds. 
 
III. Scanning
Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions:
1. What can a person’s “neutral ” face reflect?
Over time, your face comes to reflect and show your experiences.
2. How did the researchers carry out the study? 
Several student volunteers had their photos taken by the researchers, and were asked not to show any particular facial expression. 
Based on their families’ incomes, the students were divided into two groups, “above average” and “average”.
A second group of participants were asked to guess which students belonged to which group.
3. What should we do if we want to get ahead in life, according to the study?
Keeping a positive attitude could very well be one of the best ways to get ahead in life.

developed为过去分词作后置定语,修饰先行词different facial expressions 。
句意为:两个来自加拿大多伦多大学的心理学研究人员发现:一个人多年的面部表情,会逐渐积累,在这个人没有显露表情的时候体现出来。
2. “Over time, your face comes to reflect and show your experiences,” co-author Nicholas Rule wrote in the study, which was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
comes to reflect 意为开始反映,come to do 。
which引导定语从句, 修饰先行词the study。
句意为:作者之一尼古拉斯·鲁尔在发表于《人格与社会心理学》期刊的研究中写道:随着时间的流逝,你的面容开始反映你的阅历。
3. The participants’ choices were made by looking at photos of people from both groups. It was assumed that those who looked the happiest were from the above average group.
It was assumed that  it为形式主语,that引导主语从句,意为假定。
who引导定语从句,修饰先行词those 。
句意为:参与者的决定是通过观察两组照片做出的,假设那些看起来最快乐的人来自高收入家庭。
4. According to the scientists, these findings are interesting as people with “above average” faces may end up being more successful than others, no matter which background they come from. 
as引导原因状语从句。
end up doing  意为结果……,以……告终。
no matter which引导让步状语从句,相当于whichever 。
句意为:科学家们认为,这些发现很有意思,因为那些拥有“高收入”面容的人可能结果会比其他人更成功,无论他们来自什么社会背景。
