Close Reading Read the article, and try to fill in the chart about the similarities and differences between the two movies. Read the article again, and decide whether the following statements are true or false. 1.“Replicants” are people who make robots to work for humans. 2.For fans of Blade Runner 1982, the sequel was worth waiting for. 3.Police officer K is a human being who is sent to kill the robots. 4.Some replicants in Blade Runner 2049 are even more human-like than the human beings. Lead-in Do you like fruit? Which fruit do you like best? What about the durian? Do you like its smell? Why does it smell like that? Can we change its smell while keeping its good taste? II. Skimming Read the passage quickly and answer the question. 1. What is the main idea of the article? Scientists recently found that a gene called MGL is responsible for the smell of the durian. III. Scanning Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions. 1. Why is the durian’s smell important for the plant? •Key: In the wilderness, the durian’s smell serves an important purpose – survival (存活). The fruit’s special smell attracts animals, which eat and spread its seeds (种子). 2. Why do so many of us enjoy eating this unusual fruit? Key: It has a very rich, creamy taste. To people who enjoy eating it, durian has a heavenly smell and melts in the mouth. 3. How can the study help us? •Key: By identifying the MGL gene, scientists could theoretically produce durian that doesn’t smell as strong, and therefore increase its marketability. What’s more, changing the durian’s DNA could also help keep the fruit’s biodiversity. IV. Language study Translate the sentences. Pay attention to the sentence structures. 1.
