Color of the year sends message of strength (P1)

I. Pre-reading
What is your favorite color? Why is it your favorite?

II. Skimming
What is 2018’s ‘Color of the Year’ by the Pantone Color Institute
Ultra Violet.

III. Scanning
Read the text carefully and answer the following questions.
1. Why does the author mention US music icon Prince in Paragraph 2?
To show that purple is popular among many creative geniuses.

2. Which women’s right movements took place this year?
In September, women in Saudi Arabia were finally given the right to drive, which is something they used to be sent to jail for doing. In October, women all around the world started sharing their experiences of being sexually assaulted by powerful men after keeping quiet about these experiences for a long time.

The roots of TIME’s annual franchise -- singling out the person or persons who most influenced the events of the year -- lie in the so-called “great man theory” of history, a phrasing that sounds particularly anachronistic at this moment. But the idea that influential, inspirational individuals shape the world could not be more apt this year.

3. What does the Pantone “Color of the Year” mean, according to Pressman?
He thinks the Pantone “Color of the Year” has come to mean so much more than “what’s trending” in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.

4. How is the color purple related to creating and balancing?
Because it comes from the mixing of two opposite colors – passionate red and calm blue. Just as Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, put it, [ultra violet] brings hope and an uplifting message. It communicates originality and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.

5. What do the following people think about the color purple?

IV. Language study
1. The most famous of those is the late US music icon Prince, who is well known for his hit Purple Rain, and his custom-made purple piano, which had been scheduled to go on a concert tour with the musician before he passed away last year.
• late adj.已故的; hit n. 成功,红极一时的人物或事物;
• custom-made  adj.
• Schedule vt.
• Which 引导非限定性定语从句,修饰先行词 his custom-made purple piano

2. But it wasn’t until Ultra Violet – a special shade of purple – was named 2018’s Color of the Year by the Pantone Color Institute that we started to realize that purple could also be “an empowering color”, ...
• 句中it wasn’t until … that …是not until结构在强调句型中的运用,其基本句型为:it is/ was + not until ...

3. It communicates originality and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.
• communicate  vt. If you communicate information, a feeling, or an idea to someone, you let them know about it.
• originality n. 独创性;original adj.
• visionary  adj.

Read the article and answer the following questions.
1. What is the article mainly about?
It’s about different countries’ food waste problems.

2. Why shouldn’t we take food for granted and waste it according to the text?

Yet, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted annually around the world, which is about one-third of all food produced each year.

IV. Post reading
Can you think of some ways to reduce the amount of food wasted in schools and families?

V. Writing
Writing task:

One possible version:
Recently, nongovernmental organizations and activists around China initiated the “Clean Your Plate Campaign”. The campaign, launched online, was soon adopted by people across China in a bid to reduce food waste.
Chinese people are well known for being hospitable and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if guests finish all their food. However, this idea only leads to huge food waste.
Luckily, the campaign has the support of many. Some restaurant owners give stickers to guests who finish what they ordered. When they have 10 stickers, they get a free meal. Other restaurants are now serving smaller dishes and encouraging guests to take leftovers home.
As students, we can also contribute. This semester, 12 of us started a club opposing food waste. We made posters and went to many restaurants to spread our message about saving food.
In my opinion, reducing food waste is a big task, so it’s important that everyone does their part.
