Common cold has no cure (P6)
I. Presentation
Discussion:
What do you usually do when you catch a cold?
How do you get rid of it?

II. Reading
Read the article and answer the following questions:
1. What does the author want to tell us?
Nothing really cures a common cold.

2. How can people recover from a common cold according to James Taylor?
Colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak.

3. How do antiviral drugs work?
They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. To do that, the drugs must fit and lock into the virus like the right pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

4. According to Professor Ann Palmenberg, why did most of the previous drug trials against rhinovirus fail?
Because the two cold viruses that scientists had long known about were rhinovirus A and B. But they didn’t find out about the existence of a third virus, rhinovirus C, until 2006. All three of them contribute to the common cold, but drugs that work well against rhinovirus A and B have little effect when used against C.

5. Why is the 3-D model of rhinovirus C helpful?
It shows that the surface of the virus is different from that of other cold viruses. With the model in hand, hopefully a real cure for common cold is on its way.

III. Language study
1. According to James Taylor, professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak, so it’s easy to believe that it’s medicine – rather than time – that deserves the credit, USA Today reported.
本句去掉it’s … that,剩下的部分“medicine – rather than time – deserves the credit”是完整的句子,所以可以断定是强调句。

2. They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures (结构) of the virus. To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right pieces of a jigsaw (拼图) puzzle, which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3-D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enough.
结构分析:like the right piece of a jigsaw (拼图) puzzle用作方式状语,which引导非限制性定语从句,before引导时间状语从句;that引导的定语从句修饰先行词an antiviral drug。
