Tell your own story (P1)
江苏省江阴市第一中学  黄华

I. Warming up
What is the biggest agony you’ve faced in life?
But
There is no greater agony (煎熬) than bearing an untold story inside you.
——Maya Angelou
Do you like writing? Have you ever thought about writing your own novel?

II. Fast reading
1. A chance to tell our own story in the US National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)
2. Introduction of NaNoWriMo
Participants are required to finish a 50,000-word story by the end of November.
There will be no judges or prizes.
It’s not really a competition.

III. Detailed reading
Read the passage and answer the following questions:
1. Why does the writer think this competition is not easy?
Because developing the habit of writing – and actually having something to write – every day for an entire month doesn’t come easily.
Because you have to drag every word kicking and screaming onto the page and turn off the part of your brain that wants to backspace.
2. Why does the writer mention Jade Pearson?
To prove that everyone has the potential to be a storyteller. As US writer Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) once wrote, “Any man’s life, told truly, is a novel.”
3. What does it mean if you are a winner at NaNoWriMo?
It doesn’t just mean that you’re good at writing. Knowing you can write a book in a month makes anything seem possible.
Maybe NaNoWriMo is a competition after all.

IV. Discussion
Do you think it is a competition? Give your reasons.
What would you write about if you participated in this activity?

School offers space for talent to grow (P2)
江苏省南菁高级中学  范克强

I. Pre-reading: brain-storming
Have you ever heard about these people? How much do you know about them?
Wang Weiyong, Vice President of CR Vanguard (华润万家)
Zhang Yaqin, President of Baidu
Li Junling, Vice President of ITBU of Alibaba Group
Do you know about the School of the Gifted Young of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC)? Would you like to go to school there?

II. While-reading
Fast reading
Read the article and answer the question:
1. What’s the main idea of the passage?
The passage analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of a special program offered by USTC, as well as changes that have been made in its philosophy and objectives.
2. Why did some students regret joining the program?
The program creates various external pressures, such as constant media coverage and high expectations from relatives and the public, as well as pressure from university peers. This pressure had a bad effect on their personalities.
3. What changes has SCGY made in its philosophy and objectives?
SCGY has gotten rid of criteria such as IQ tests and has taken a more comprehensive approach, including psychological tests and offering extracurricular classes to promote its students’ overall development.
4. Why does the author use the title school offers space for students to grow? What is the purpose of this title?
The title shows that it is not high grades or high IQ, but overall development that counts for students. Schools are supposed to offer extracurricular classes and give students freedom to make the most of their talent and potential.
