What do you know about Notre Dame Cathedral?
Notre Dame Cathedral
Built in 1163, it is one of the first Gothic cathedrals to have arched (拱形的) exterior (外部的) supports, known as “flying buttresses (飞扶壁)”. It also combined Gothic art with Christian architecture.
stained glass rose windows
These windows are made of many small panes (窗格) and feature various Christian images.
The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
Victor Hugo began writing the novel in 1829, largely to make his contemporaries more aware of the value of the Gothic architecture, which was neglected and often destroyed to be replaced by new buildings.
Unfortunately, while undergoing renovation and restoration, the roof of Notre-Dame caught fire on the evening of 15 April 2019 (local time). Burning for around 15 hours, the cathedral sustained serious damage, including the destruction of the spire and most of the lead-covered wooden roof above the stone vaulted ceiling.
