Printing a new heart (P6)
山东省烟台第二中学 赵娜娜

Lead-in
Why are heart transplants difficult?
Few suitable heart donations
The patient’s body often rejects the heart

What is the solution to the problems?
Using the patient’s own cells to make a new heart

3D human heart
The new 3D human heart is complete with cells, blood vessels (血管), chambers (心室) and other parts a heart needs to function normally.

3D printing
3D printing is a family of processes that produces objects by adding material in layers that correspond to successive cross-sections (横截面) of a 3D model. Plastics and metal alloys (合金) are the most commonly used materials for 3D printing, but it can work on nearly anything – from concrete (混凝土) to living tissue.

Reading for main idea
What is the main idea of the article?
Researchers have 3D-printed a heart using a patient's cells, providing hope that the technique could be used to heal hearts or engineer new ones for transplants.

Reading for details
Answer the following questions:
1.What makes the 3D-printed heart special?
(1) Complete functional heart structures.
Unlike the previous 3D-printed heart structure, the new heart is complete with cells, blood vessels, chambers and other parts a heart needs to function normally.
(2)Less risk of organ rejection
The tissue in the heart came from the patients themselves. So ideally, if it were to be placed in the body of someone in need of a transplant, there would be less risk of organ rejection.

2. What needs to be improved about the 3D-printed heart?
For one thing, the experimental heart is only the size of a thumb. And, although it can contract like a muscle, it cannot pump out blood like a real one.

3. What kind of new chapter does the 3D-printed heart open?
(1) Personalized 3D-printed heart
Patients will no longer have to wait for transplants or take medications to prevent the rejection of the heart. Instead, the needed heart will be printed, fully personalized for every patient.
(2) 3D printing probably can create other organs
The scientists foresee a time when the 3D printing of organs will be an everyday medical practice. “Maybe, in 10 years, there will be organ printers in the finest hospitals around the world and these procedures will be conducted routinely,” Dvir said.

Understanding sentences
1.This is the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an entire heart.
本句中下划线部分是定语从句,其前省略了引导词that或when,修饰先行词time(在指时间的普通名词后面,在非正式文体中when经常用that来代替或省去),从句时态多用完成时。

这是我第一次游览这个城市。
This is the first time that I have visited this city.

2.However, the development is still regarded as a major breakthrough in medicine.
 “be regarded as”译为“被看做……”,常见的同义短语还有:take/treat/see/consider/acknowledge…as…
许多穷苦人都把他视为他们的精神领袖。
Many of the poor acknowledged him as their spiritual leader.

3.So ideally, if it were to be placed in the body of someone in need of a transplant, there would be less risk of organ rejection.
此处为虚拟语气的用法,是对将来的虚拟。对将来虚拟时,从句:if+主语+did(were)/ were to do/ should do
主句:主语+would/could/should/might do

如果他明天来这儿的话,我就跟他谈谈。
If he should come here tomorrow, I would talk to him.

Discussion

3D-printed heart
breakthrough
limitations
