Running into record books (P1)
山东省烟台第二中学 赵霞
Lead in
Have you ever watched a marathon race?
What do you think makes an extraordinary marathon runner?
Is it …
Outstanding physical conditions?
Persistence and perseverance?
... ...

Skimming
Read the passage and find out what else could be important for a marathon
champion.
Science and technology could help modern athletes maximize their potential.

Skimming: Read for the main idea
What is the main idea of the article?
On Oct 12, Eliud Kipchoge, a 34-year-old Olympic champion from Kenya, became the first person to run a marathon in less than two hours. Apart from Kipchoge’s strong willpower and outstanding physical condition, a few tricks of science and technology helped him reach this milestone in human athletic achievement.

Scanning: Read for details
Read the passage again and answer the following questions.
1. What does Eliud Kipchoge think of his new world record after the race?
He thinks that no one is limited, which shows the positivity of sport and people can make a beautiful world when running together.
2. What preparations did Kipchoge’s team make before the race?
First, they picked a course in Vienna, for its gentle curves instead of hills and turns which could slow the runner down.
Second, the city’s cool and dry weather helped keep Kipchoge’s body running more efficiently throughout the race.
Third, they chose a special pair of shoes designed to give a significant edge to anyone wearing them in a race.
3. How do they make use of science and technology to ensure success?
There is a dream team of pacers, deployed by sports scientists. Five runners formed a V-shape ahead of Kipchoge, reducing drag, and two runners followed directly behind to push him forward. Kipchoge stayed in the center of the formation. The team rotated members every five kilometers, and he stayed under a two-hour pace for almost the entire length of the race.
There was also a pace car driving 15 meters in front of everyone, casting a laser line on the road to keep them on track.
