What is a real teenager’s life like (P4)
Glamorous (迷人的) parties, beautiful cars and designer clothes… the life of a Gossip Girl character isn’t exactly what you’d expect for a 16-year-old high school student.
But the TV series and the original (最初的) books – which have just come to China from the Jieli Publishing House – follow Serena van de Woodsen and her elite (精英) set of friends in New York’s wealthiest district.         1
Blair, Serena’s best friend, is queen of the social scene at high school and she dates Nate. Chuck, meanwhile, is the “bad boy” of the story, exploiting (利用) his dad’s enormous wealth to get exactly what he wants.
However, some people criticize Gossip Girl for being silly and frivolous
And, based on my experience at high school in the UK, teenagers have more to worry about than what they’ll be wearing and who they’ll be taking to the latest Saturday night get-together.
For a start, you have GCSE exams to worry about. Each high school pupil will study nine or ten subjects over two years and then, at age 16, everybody has to sit an exam for each one.
3        After GCSEs come A-levels. I took three subjects – History, Italian and French – and was examined in each one when I was 18 years old. These are the exams that will determine whether you get into college and I, for one, found them very stressful.
4        I went to an all-girls school, but boys were the subject of our conversations a lot of the time. We’d discuss who we liked and occasionally some girls would even fight over boys.
But for the most part, Gossip Girl offers an insight (见识) into a world that most of us will never experience.        5
A. The slog (苦干) doesn’t stop there.
B. As an escape from reality, nothing beats it.
C. You’ll meet Blair Waldorf, Chuck Bass and Nate Archibald.
D. After all that hard work the choice is yours.
E. After all, the action centers all around teenage relationships, clothes and partying.
F. The show was noted to have held the best audience retention of America’s Next Top Model.
G. That’s not to say there aren’t some similarities between my school experience and Serena and Blair’s.

II. Answer the following questions.
1. Does the writer think Gossip Girl fully reflects UK teenagers’ lives?

2. What are the two major exams UK teenagers usually prepare for?

3. What are the similarities between the writer’s school experience and Serena and Blair’s in Gossip Girl?

4. What does the writer think of Gossip Girl?

Key:
I. 1-5 CEAGB
II.
1. No, she doesn’t. Based on her experience at high school in the UK, teenagers have more to worry about than what they’ll be wearing and who they’ll be taking to the latest Saturday night get-together.
2. GCSE exams and A-levels.
3. Boys were also the subject of their conversations a lot of the time.
4. For the most part, Gossip Girl offers an insight into a world that most of us will never experience. As an escape from reality, nothing beats it.

3. Why are the boys called hoodies?
A. Because they are always playing with cell phones.
B. Because they wear sweatshirts with hoods.
C. Because they listen to annoying music.
D. The writer doesn’t mention the reason in the article.
4. From the article we can conclude that ______.
A. the author is against teenage fashion
B. teenagers can identify other groups easily
C. teenagers express themselves through their fashion sense
D. each group of teenagers is named after its preferred music

Key:
1. 文章The 'emos'这部分的and their haircuts which usually have a long fringe 可知D正确。
2. 根据the Goths这部分的this small group of teenagers were dressed from head to toe in
3. 根据提到hoodies说(they were) named after their hooded sweatshirts.

Key:
1. A。 According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the wild tiger population has shrunk 97 percent in 100 years because of hunting and shrinking habitats.
Jean-Christoph Vie, …, suggested the tiger could be seen as a test-case for whether countries are really serious about saving biological diversity.
