I. Fast reading
Read the text and figure out the structure of the text.
Part I (Para 1): Soccer is more than just a game, especially so on derby day.
Part II (Para 2-6): Spain’s national derby – Real Madrid versus FC Barcelona.
Part III (Para 7-9): Another fierce derby: Boca Juniors versus River Plate in Argentina.

II. Specific reading
Read the text again and choose the best answer:
1. Why did the Barcelona fans make a big mosaic of the Catalan national flag?
A. To represent Catalan identity.
B. To call for a more united country.
C. To show their love and support for Spain.
D. To impress and entertain the audience.
2. What is the biggest reason for Boca Juniors and River Plate’s rivalry?
A. Different cultures.
B. Different religions.
C. Different social classes.
D. The competition system.
3. What is the article mainly about?
A. What soccer fan culture is.
B. Why derbies are so fierce.
C. How derby came into being.
D. How rivalry between two teams makes their game more interesting.

Key:
1. A。 尤其结合文章第一段的“It’s a source of identity…”和第六段的“While the Catalonians and their club FC Barcelona fought to maintain their identity…”
2. C。由倒数第二段的“but a huge class divide fuels their bitter hatred for each other”可以得此答案,class divide意思是“阶级差异”,fuel在这里作动词,意思是“刺激,推动”。

III. Language study
1. It’s a source of identity, a link to the culture of a place or region – and never more so than on derby (同城比赛) day.
never more so than…
eg: Being homeless is always lonely and never more so than at Christmas.
Being a Notts County supporter has always been a wild roller coaster ride but never more so than over the past few years.

2. To see this in phenomenon action, look no further than Spain’s national derby – Real Madrid versus FC Barcelona.
look no further than只需看看,不妨就看
eg: If she is looking for a new nation to follow at the World Cup, she should look no further than Argentina.

3. On Feb 26, the two powerhouses (豪门) staged a breathtaking showdown (一决胜负).
Stage
eg: The event will be staged in Paris.
The band is staging a concert.

4. At Barcelona’s Camp Nou Stadium before Tuesday’s match, when thousands of Barcelona fans held up red and gold cards forming a big mosaic (马赛克图画) of the Catalan national flag, it became clear that this clash (交锋) goes far beyond sports.
eg: Your performance goes far beyond praise.
While many people love the Olympics for the competition, its significance to me goes far beyond sports.

5. “Just seven kilometers separates these two fierce rivals but a huge class divide fuels their bitter hatred (敌意) for each other,” noted The Observer.
eg: His words fuelled her anger still more.
The criticism she has faced has only fueled her determination to succeed.

3) How is the last paragraph developed?
A. By analyzing a cause and an effect.
B. By making comparisons.
C. By giving examples.
D. By presenting research findings.
Key:
1) C。由第二段首句以及第六段的“3-D printing can create just about anything you can think of”可知C正确。

2. Answer the following questions:
1)      How does a 3-D printer work?
2)      What are the advantages and disadvantages of the 3-D printing technology according to the article?

Key:
1) Just as a traditional printer sprays ink onto paper line by line, modern 3-D printers spread material onto a surface layer by layer, from the bottom to the top, gradually building up a shape. Instead of ink, the materials the 3-D printer uses are mainly plastic, resin and certain metals.
2) Advantage: 3-D printing can create just about anything you can think of
Disadvantages:

A sister’s love (P6)
I. Fast reading
What happened between the author and her sister?
They once rescued each other when the other was in need. In daily life, they sometimes argued and fought, but most of the time they were kind to each other.

II. Specific reading
1. Choose the best answer:
1) When the author found Tawna bleeding, she ____.
A. yelled to their mom for help
B. was so scared that she was paralyzed
C. worked hard to bring her to safety
D. ran three blocks with her attached to her back
2) At the author’s ninth birthday, she _____.
A. roller skated calmly in her neighborhood
B. disliked Tawna’s company during the roller skating
C. was impressed by her sister’s help when she got hurt
D. was seriously injured in an accident and went into a coma (昏迷)
3) By saying “Of course, ours was more complicated than the typical friendship”, the writer means that ____.
A. they were friends as well as sisters
B. they fought as often as enemies do
C. they would do anything for each other when in need
D. they quarreled with each other at times despite their closeness
4) Which of the following best describes the relationship between the author and Tawna?
A. Tense.              B. Faithful.           C. Awkward.          D. Harmonious.

Key:
1) C。从第一段的“the sight of blood moved me to swift action”可以得此答案,同时排除了B,B中的paralyzed意思是“不知所措的”。 由第一段的“I grabbed my skateboard, positioned my sister on it”可知,作者是把妹妹放在滑板上,而不是绑在背上,D有误。
2) C。 由第四段的“but I was fine”可以排除D。

2. Writer’s toolbox
1.第二段的最后… she was my first best friend, and I would have done anything for her. I was her first best friend, and she would have done anything for me.
Tawna picked me up off the ground and wheeled me home on my skates. We pick each other up when we are down and do our best to wheel each other to safety.

III. Language study
1. Luckily for me, this devotion went both ways.
The problem with love at first sight is that it doesn’t necessarily work both ways.

2. We called each other names, sure. We even had a stage during which we were constantly trying to bite each others noses off.
词组:call sb names嘲弄或骂某人(speak to sb with cruel and insulting words
“You’re such a stupid jerk!” “Hey, don’t call me names!”
句中bite each other’s noses off的表达夸张生动,值得学习。

IV. Post-reading
