5. Which of the following best describes Alexis?
A. Creative and responsible.
B. Smart and cooperative.
C. Independent and humorous.
D. Fashionable and amusing.

Key:
3. B。由倒数第三段的“I’ve had people come up to me in the hall and say, ‘Hey, I saw your blog. I’m working on one of the projects right now,’ instead of just going out and buying stuff,” Alexis said.

Key:

Group work:
Ø   Before alarm clocks were invented, what did people depend on to wake them up in the morning?
Ø   What do you think makes roosters crow in the morning?

II. Reading
Read the text and complete the quiz below:
Choose the best answer:
1. What has been recently discovered to make roosters crow in the morning?
A. External stimuli like noises.
B. Their biological clocks.
C. Exposure to morning light.
D. Increased hormones in their bodies in the morning.
2. What does the underlined word “deter” mean in Paragraph 6?
A. Prevent.         B. Attract.
C. Focus on.            D. Take care of.
3. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?
A. Roosters have the same circadian rhythms as humans.
B. We can make use of our biological clocks to improve our health.
C. It has been discovered that dark conditions can have some effects on roosters’ crowing.
D. Roosters have a regular biological clock which helps them adapt to the environment well.
4. How would Kristen Navara describe Yoshimura’s study?
A. Worthless.            B. Meaningful.   C. Controversial.              D. Unscientific.

Key:
1. C。由第七段“[It is] proof that the behavior is entrained to a circadian rhythm, said Yoshimura.
3. B。由倒数第三段的“keeping a regular biological clock is often tied to good health”可以得此答案。
4. B。从最后一段的“This is a very interesting study”判断,Kristen NavaraYoshimura的研究是肯定的态度。

III. Language study
1. But Yoshimura and his colleagues now claim to have finally figured out the reason – roosters don’t need morning light to know when to start crowing; they will crow at the same time every day regardless of whether they can see dawn breaking.

2. By consciously being aware of the schedule, our body has a chance to adapt to it, so keeping a regular biological clock is often tied to good health.
Be tied to sth表示“与……紧密联系在一起”,相当于be connected to sth。例如:
He argues that poverty is closely tied to poor health.
The prices of Web ads are tied to the number of visitors the sites have.

1. What happened between the author and Mother Winters?
2. What happened between the author and Mother Henderson?

2. The author gave the broken table to Mother Henderson to throw it away. But she didn't do as the author told. Instead, she kept it for the author for 30 years.

C. He was eager to share it with his friends.
D. He was ashamed of his awkward woodworking.

A. He didn’t do as he was told.
B. The wet coating on the table made her hands dirty.
C. It was forbidden to ever bring the table back to the dormitory.
D. He went back to the dormitory before the class was dismissed.
3. Which of the following can best describe Mother Winters?
A. Devoted but emotional.
B. Genuine and considerate.
C. Tough and strict.

B. She had kept the table for him for 30 years.
C. She brightened the author’s miserable childhood.
D. She didn’t throw the table away as Mother Winters had ordered.

Key:
1. A。从第二段的“I looked upon it as though I had created a life”可知,作者做好桌子以后很有成就感。
