Ø The Netherlands is often referred to as Holland. The official name of the country is the (Kingdom of the) Netherlands. The Netherlands consists of twelve provinces. Two of them, North and South Holland, are the two provinces that together make Holland. Due to the maritime (海事的) and economic power of these provinces in the 17th century, the Netherlands became known worldwide as Holland. The inhabitants of the Netherlands are called the Dutch. 

Ø Almost half of the Netherlands lies beneath sea level.

Ø The country is drenched with rain year round, but the Dutch never use umbrellas. They use raincoats and rain “suits” instead (too hard to ride your bicycle with an umbrella; plus, it’s really windy all the time).

Ø People often associate Holland with windmills, tulips and bicycles. 

Ø There are more bicycles than residents in the Netherlands.

To make cycling safer and more appealing, the Dutch have built the widest cycling network in the world.

Bicycle lanes and paths in the Netherlands are clearly marked, have smooth surfaces and include separate signs and lights for those on two wheels. The lanes are wide enough to allow side-by-side cycling and passing.

In many cities the bike lanes are completely segregated from motorized traffic. And in many traffic situations cyclists are given priority over drivers.

The government also makes cycling proficiency lessons a compulsory part of the Dutch school curriculum.

Bike parking facilities are ubiquitous in the country.
