First days at UK unis (P4)

I. Warming up

What was your first day at high school like?

II. Reading

Read the article and choose the best answer:

1. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?

A. To introduce how UK students prepare for college.

B. To show different challenges that college freshmen face in the UK and China.

C. To describe how UK colleges welcome newcomers at the beginning of a new semester.

D. To inform us about what the first day of going to college is like in the UK.

2. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?

A. On the first day of college, most UK freshmen don’t know each other.

B. When the new semester begins, most UK freshmen drive to college by themselves.

C. Most British parents choose to stay around their children’s colleges for a few days at the beginning of the semester.

D. For many freshmen, when they say goodbye to their parents, they are also saying goodbye to their childhood.

3. A similarity between college freshmen in the UK and China is that ____.

A. the approach roads to their colleges are packed with cars filled with nervous families

B. they have contacted their future roommates through social networking sites

C. once they get to the campus, they want to make sure that they have access to the Internet

D. they spend their first week getting to know their roommates and partying

4. From the article, we can conclude that Sean Coughlan’s report is ____.

A. critical                     B. descriptive

C. sympathetic               D. bitter

Key:

1. D。 Now, with more than 420,000 youngsters in the UK starting their new college school year, what is their very first day like?

2. D。由第四段的“The door closes on a student’s room and parents and children go their separate ways. For many families, if childhood has a final moment, this is it.” 由倒数第三段的“Before they arrive they have been using social networking to get to know their future roommates”可知A不对;由第四段描述的家长送孩子上学的场面可知B不对。

3. C。由第五段的“In both cases, new arrivals most want to know about their Internet connections.”

III. Post-reading

What do you imagine your first day at college will be like?

Will your experience be like that of UK freshmen? How so?

IV. Language study

1. According to Coughlan, at the very beginning it is not hard to spot something familiar to Chinese – a stream of parents arriving with their sons and daughters at the student village.

Can you spot the difference between the pictures?

Ø  a stream of: 一大批的,川流不息的,一大股的

A stream of cold air came in through the crack in the door.

2. “They’re not so much Generation Y as Generation Wi-fi”.

Ø  not so much … as …

Sailing is not so much a science as it is an art. [=Sailing is more of an art than a science.]

Ø  Generation Y: Generation Y is also known as the Millennial (千禧年的) Generation. There are no precise dates for when Generation Y starts and ends. Commentators use beginning birth dates from the early 1980s to the early 2000s.

Mice lose fear of cats (P5)

I. Pre-reading

Discussion:

Why do you think mice are afraid of cats?

II. Reading

Read the article and choose the best answer:

1. What is the main purpose of the article?

A. To analyze why mice are afraid of cats.

B. To inform us of a harmful parasite called Toxoplasma gondii.

C. To introduce a new study on how a certain parasite affects mice.

D. To describe the evolution of Toxoplasma gondii.

2. The underlined word “hardwired” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to _____.

A. deeply rooted

B. gradually changed

C. quickly moved

D. closely linked

3. It was found from the experiment that mice infected with Toxoplasma gondii _____.

A. stayed far away from cats’ urine

B. moved around freely and didn’t react to cats’ urine

C. became more sensitive to cats’ smell than normal mice

D. became more afraid of cats after recovering from the infection

4. What can we conclude from the article?

A. Harmful as it is to human beings, Toxoplasma gondii does no harm to mice or cats.

B. People who are infected by Toxoplasma gondii will have permanent brain damage.

C. Toxoplasma gondii causes people to develop strange and deadly diseases.

D. With certain infections, even after they have been cured by antibiotics, there may still be some effects from the bacteria that caused them.

Key:

2. A。根据上一句“Scientists have long known that even if a mouse has never seen a cat before, it is still able to detect (觉察) chemical signals released from it and run away in fear.”

3. B。由第四段的“They noted that normal mice stayed far away from the urine while mice that were infected with the parasite walked freely around the test area.” 由第五段的“even after researchers cured the mice of the infection, they no longer reacted with fear to a cat’s smell”可以推知D不对。

III. Language study

1. The parasite was found to be more powerful than originally thought – even after researchers cured the mice of the infection, they no longer reacted with fear to a cat’s smell, which could indicate that the infection has caused a permanent change in mice’s brains.

2. So the parasite had to develop a way of tricking the mice into getting eaten more easily – thus helping itself go inside a cat – by taking away mice’s sense of alarm.

Trick sb into doing sth:诱骗某人使之做某事。例如:

Be careful. They are trying to trick you into buying something you don't need.
