What do Americans dream about in 2013? (P4) I. Pre-reading What do you know about the American Dream? What is that dream about? II. Reading Read the article and choose the best answer: 1. What do the first six paragraphs mainly talk about? A. How the American Dream started. B. What changed the American Dream. C. The meaning of the American Dream to different generations. D. The importance of the American Dream to Americans. 2. According to a survey done recently, nearly one third of US respondents consider ____ to be the American Dream. A. home ownership B. retirement at 65 C. freedom from debt D. a family with two children 3. What changed people’s views of the American Dream according to the article? A. The 2008 financial crisis. B. The stress of owning a home. C. A lack of confidence in themselves. D. Their dissatisfaction with government. 4. Which of the following might Adam Levin agree with? A. The American Dream is dying due to new financial realities. B. It’s almost impossible for American people to achieve anything in their new financial conditions. C. An important part of being American is feeling confident in the possibility of reaching one’s goals. D. The American Dream is special because it is accepted by everyone in the US at once. Key: 1. C。文章开头的前六段主要是围绕第一段的“But what exactly is that dream all about?” 2. B。由第八段“A new survey done by US finance website Credit.com found that while 27.9 percent of respondents see the American Dream as retiring at 65 and 23 percent view the American Dream as being debt-free, only 18.2 percent see it as owning a home.” 3. A。由倒数第二段的首句“In the aftermath (后果) of the 2008 financial crisis, most Americans dream not of riches, but of basic financial stability.” 4. C。由最后一段“But what’s always been special about the American Dream is our ability to make [it] come true. When we’ve lost that, we’ve lost a little bit of what it means to be American.” III. Post-reading List the meanings of the American dream to different generations of Americans according to the article. To early immigrants: The United States was a land of opportunity, where “the streets were paved with gold” and anyone could become successful. Later: The core of the American Dream was “about owning a home”. Today: 27.9 percent of respondents see the American Dream as retiring at 65 and 23 percent view the American Dream as being debt-free and only 18.2 percent see it as owning a home. IV. Language study How do you understand the following sentence? When Americans dream of retirement and freedom from debt, they dream of being able to exhale (喘口气). The failure to own a home is generally not a source of stress in the same way that drowning in debt and the inability to retire are. It explains why Americans dream of retirement and freedom from debt. The stress from the inability to retire and be debt-free is usually more than that from the failure to own a home, which makes them feel like they are unable to breathe. Dangers from warming (P5) I. Pre-reading Discussion: What do you think contributes to global warming? II. Reading Read the article and choose the best answer: 1. The underlined word “dominant” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to ____. A. leading B. indirect C. secondary D. common 2. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article? A. Greenhouse gases have been proven to harm the Earth. B. Global warming can increase the chances of droughts and floods. C. According to the report, there is little we can do to prevent global warming. D. The hugeness of oceans makes them better absorbers of heat than the air. 3. According to the article, the rise in global temperatures between 1901 and 2012 ____. A. is more harmful to smaller creatures than bigger ones B. is likely to cause many species to become extinct C. has made the Earth’s ecosystems more sensitive to changes D. is not serious because most of the extra heat has been absorbed by the oceans 4. What is Michel Jarraud’s attitude toward the report released by the United Nations? A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested. Key: 1. A。由下文的“humans’ use of fossil fuels (化石燃料) is the main source of excess (多余的) greenhouse gases”可以推知这里dominant的意思与main相近,所以答案为A。 2. B。 由第三段的“While many greenhouse gases occur naturally and are needed to keep the Earth warm enough to support life”可知并非所有的温室气体都对地球有害,所以A不对。 由第四段的“a major part of that heat has been absorbed into the oceans, which is not surprising given that they cover two thirds of Earth’s surface. Also, water has a much greater capacity to absorb heat than the air does”可知并非海洋面积之大使得它比空气更能吸收热量,水的吸热性能也占有很大的原因,所以D不对。 3. B。 4. A。 A。 III. Post-reading Discussion: What can we do to help slow down the pace of global warming? IV. Writing After discussing with your classmates, write an essay answering the question: “What can we do to help slow down the pace of global warming?” Take a wild ride (P6) 山东青岛开发区一中 李田田 I.
