Eat nicely (P4)

I. Pre-reading

Discussion:

* Why are table manners important?

* Can you name any table manners?

II. Fast reading

Read the article quickly and answer the following questions.

1. Why does Henry Hitchings think table manners are important?

Because he thinks they can act as a lubricant, minimizing social conflict. They turn our natural warrior-like selves into more elegant ones.

2. What did King David I of Scotland propose about table manners?

He proposed that any of his subjects who learned to eat more neatly be given a tax deduction.

3. When were table forks introduced to America?

In 1633.

4. How is the way American people use a fork and knife different from how British people do it?

In the US, when food needs cutting with a knife, people generally cut a bite and then lay aside the knife and transfer the fork to their right hand. Then they pick up one bite at a time. By contrast, Britons keep the fork in their left hands and don’t lay their knives down.

III. Specific reading

Read the article again and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.

1. What does the story mainly talk about?

A. The importance of proper etiquette at the table.

B. The development of table manners in Western countries.

C. Some unwritten rules of table manners in the US and UK.

D. Differences between American and British table manners.

2. The phrase “caught on” in the fifth paragraph probably means ____.

A. worked in practice        B. became popular

C. drew attention                     D. had a positive effect

3. Which of the following events influenced people’s table manners the most according to the article?

A. The introduction of forks.

B. The tax deduction policy.

C. The rise of the Renaissance.

D. Petrus Alfonsi’s efforts in promoting table manners.

4. What can we conclude from the article?

A. British and American table manners are completely different from each other.

B. American people pay more attention to their table manners than British people do.

C. With globalization, the American cut-and-switch method has been abandoned in the US.

D. British people’s way of using a knife and fork may be more efficient than American people’s.

Key:

3. A。由第五段的“None of these was more significant than the introduction of the table fork”可知A为正确答案。

4. D。由最后两段可以推知,美国人传统的用刀叉习惯是“cut a bite, then lay aside the knife and transfer the fork to their right hand”,而英国人是“Britons keep the fork in the left hand and don’t lay the knife down”,因为不要换手拿叉子,所以有可能更有效率,所以可以推知D为正确答案。

Afraid of dentist’s office (P5)

I. Pre-reading

Discussion:

* Have you ever gone to the dentist? If so, how did you feel about your visit?

* Many people are afraid of going to the dentist. What do you think makes them so scared?

II. Reading

Read the article and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.

1. According to the new findings, what makes people afraid of going to the dentist?

A. The pain of dental surgeries.

B. The sound of dentists’ drills.

C. The environment in the dental clinic.

D. Their unwillingness to have their teeth extracted.

2. The underlined word “evoke” in the fourth paragraph is closest in meaning to ____.

A. remove            B. relieve             C. cause             D. expose

3. How did the volunteers react to the sound of drilling according to the article?

A. The sound of drilling didn’t produce any effects on the volunteers in the low-fear group.

B. For people in the low-fear group, the sound caused less activity in regions of their brains responsible for auditory processing.

C. For people in the high-fear group, it was a region of their brain responsible for visual and emotion processing that was activated.

D. When more fearful people heard the sound, it triggered a response in the left caudate nucleus, making them remember past unpleasant memories.

4. What are the last two paragraphs mainly about?

A. The significance of the study.

B. Some new ways to cure teeth.

C. The importance of keeping your teeth healthy.

D. The necessity of making patients at ease with seeing dentists.

Key:

1. B。由第四段的“From my clinical experience, I found that the sound of drilling can evoke anxiety in dental patients”以及之后的研究发现可知,研究发现让人孩子去看牙医的主要是钻头的声音,所以正确答案为B

III. After reading

Answer the following question:

What is the significance of the new study of how brains react to the sounds of dentists’ drills?

Key: It could help scientists find ways to make patients more at ease, since patients with anxiety about trips to the dentist might keep putting off their visits until they have more severe problems with their teeth.

A. That we should not judge people by their appearance.

B. That life is full of possibilities when we are young.

C. That it’s beneficial to try different things in our lives.

D. That what we wear can help shape who we are inside.
