Do you know how long the Great Wall of China is, where it starts in the west, and where it ends in the east?

1. What makes British people so interested in visiting this famous Chinese landmark?
It is probably a mix of its size and its reputation.
2. What was the author’s first impression of the Great Wall?
Underwhelmed by other famous world landmarks, he was surprised by how impressed he was when he got on the Great Wall .
3. What can take the magic of the Great Wall away a little, and why?
Repeated visits can take the magic away a little, as many sections look very similar, and it can get far too crowded during tourist seasons.

Translation
No pictures or explanations can prepare you for how great the wall really is, stretching off into the distance with no sign of ending.

由that引导的同位语从句
同位语从句是指在复合句中作名词的同位语的从句。后跟同位语从句的名词主要有fact, news, promise, decision, idea, truth ,suggestion, thought, order, problem, belief, possibility, word, message等。
例如:The emperor’s decision that the prisoner would be set free surprised everyone.
The order that all soldiers should stay still was given by the general.
注意:1. if不能引导同位语从句。
2. 引导同位语从句的that不能省略。
3. 同位语从句通常紧跟在它所说明的名词后面,但是有时也会被别的词隔开。
例如:He got the news from Mike that the sports meeting had been postponed.

She is not picky, she just sees more colors than ordinary people do because she is a tetrachromat.
2. What allows tetrachromats to see more colors?
A fourth cone allows them to see a range of colors invisible to everyone else.
III. True or false
1. With each cone seeing around 100 colors, most people can usually see at least 300 colors.
2. Those who have only two cones may find it difficult to tell the difference between reds and greens.
3. Tetrachromats can see more colors than most people.
4. Seeing too many colors is not only a great gift, but also a problem.

IV. Further understanding
1. What does “armed and dangerous” mean?
Usually, it means that a person is carrying a deadly weapon, and ready to use it. In the text, the author means that if her husband is allowed to use pruning shears, he will cause great damage with them.
2. If only I had taken my own advice!
The author wishes she had followed what she said about pruning shears. If she had, the crab apple tree wouldn’t have died needlessly.
3. I recently let my guard down.
Our crab apple tree and the maple tree were cut down by the author’s husband because of her lack of supervision.
4. Though he agreed it would be a regrettable loss, there was a twinkle (闪光) in his eye.
Although he was regretful that the crab tree had to die, he was very happy to trim it.
