4. Which of the following adjectives best describe Medhal?
A. Cautious and friendly.
B. Sympathetic and ambitious.
C. Independent and humorous.

Key:

2. C。从第四段的“It collects food that is past its sell-by date from businesses and delivers it to shelters for the homeless.”
3. B。从倒数第四段的“Medhal said they had been most rewarded by their interactions with people who live and work at the shelters. They said they had come to a new understanding of their privilege and responsibility toward others.”

IV. Language study
1. “To date, we’ve delivered 21,000 pounds of food that would have been wasted,” said Medhal.
To date:
This novel is his best work to date.
To date, we have not received any replies.

2. Throughout their senior year, Medhal and eight other students teamed up for three deliveries a week to nearby shelters.

B. People who are walking slowly.
C. People who are absent-minded.
D. People who are alert to their surroundings.

Key:

2. C。根据“Groups of pickpockets use a common trick designed to create a scene and confuse victims.”以及“In the confusion, both men steal what they can and pass it to a third thief who quickly runs off with the stolen goods.”

III. After reading
Discussion:
 What do you think we should do to stop ourselves from being pickpocketed?

IV. Language study
 Sentence understanding
1. Many of us are used to hearing stories of people being pickpocketed in busy places.
句中的be used to doing sth意为“习惯于做某事”,其中的to是介词,hearing …

2. Since this is one of the last places people expect to be robbed, many check where their valuables are, giving away their location to thieves.
He would be the last person who would do such a thing.

 Translate the following sentences into English with the given words.
(take advantage of)
I know she’s offered to babysit any time but I don’t want her to think we’re taking advantage of her.
Were you aware of the risks/dangers at the time?
(daydream)
As long as we don’t daydream in public, we shouldn’t/needn’t be worried about thieves.
(rob)
The group of thieves robbed the company of £2 million.
(stage)
They were going to stage a large money-raising campaign.

My aunt’s lessons (P6)
I. Skimming
Read the story quickly and find out what lessons the author learned from her aunt.
She learned from her aunt that money can make us feel rich for a while, but it is the relationships and the memories of time spent with friends and family that truly leave us wealthy.

II. Scanning
Read the article again and choose the best answer for each of the following questions.
1. Why did the author prefer to call Aunt Fannie “My Aunt Fannie”?
A. Because she wanted to show respect for her.
B. Because she believed that made her seem closer to her.
C. Because she loved to see her parents’ responses to it.
D. Because she didn’t like her and thus made fun of her.
2. According to the second paragraph, the author’s mother _____.
A. owned the large farmhouse with Aunt Fannie
B. didn’t know the exact way to make the jam
C. disliked Aunt Fannie’s stinginess and the way she would never share
D. tried to convince Aunt Fannie that the secret recipe was safe
3. The author used to believe that the quarter given to her by Aunt Fannie ____.
A. was a reminder of the valuable things in her life
B. would bring her good luck and make her rich
C. was a small reward for her help with the jam process
D. was the exact one that Aunt Fannie had received from her grandfather
4. The author thinks that we can feel wealthy if we _____.
A. have a certain secret recipe
B. have lasting love and friendship
C. share our wealth with others
D. have good fortune and money

Key:
3. B。从倒数第二段最后一句“So, I put the 1938 quarter in my dresser drawer, and waited to become rich.”
4. B。从最后一段“it is the relationships and the memories of time spent with friends and family that truly leave you wealthy.”

III. Language study
1. My Aunt Fannie: A way of politely calling “nonsense” when someone tries to give you an unbelievable excuse, line, lie, or exaggeration.
e.g. The dog ate your homework? My Aunt Fanny!

2. Even though my mother knew the recipe by heart, she never made the jam without Ms Cratty in our kitchen to direct the process and preserve the secret.

3. Whenever she was at the house, I didn’t need to be reminded to guard my thoughts and watch my tongue.

IV. Further thinking
In the author’s view, it is not money but the relationships and the memories of time spent with friends and family that truly make us wealthy. Do you agree with her opinion? Why or why not?
