I. Lead-in:
1. Do you tend to judge a person by his/her accent?
2. What do you think of people with a Shandong accent? What about a Cantonese accent?
II. Read between the lines:
1.Which accents have been voted as the ugliest ones in the UK/ US respectively?
The Pittsburgh accent in the US, and the Essex accent in the UK.
2. What TV show do people think makes the Essex accent the ugliest in the UK?
The TV show The Only Way is Essex.
3. Give examples of words/expressions in each accent.
1) The Pittsburgh accent
Downtown “dahntahn”
You guys “yinz”
2) The Essex accent
“Allow it” or “‘low it” which means
“ leave someone/something alone”
4. Were the accents just voted as the ugliest because of how strange they sound?
No, it was probably what the accents make people think of:
a) “Northerners in the US, for instance, often think of southerners as badly-educated people”
b) “the show has ‘bred a new generation of absolute idiots’ in Essex who have watched and copied the shallow characters in the show.”
5. What is the author’s tone in the passage?
Humorous.  ( the last sentence)
Future lives ‘shortened’ (Page 5)

I. Lead-in:

II. Structure:
Opinions put forward in the passage
The researchers of The Buck Institute:
People can live for 500 years.
Sir Colin Blakemore:
120 years is the absolute limit.
The author:
Depending how healthy your lifestyle is, you can enjoy a long life.
Reasons for each opinion
The researchers of the Buck Institute:
New technology. They changed the genetic pathways of a worm and it turned out that it lived 5 times longer.
Sir Colin Blakemore:
Based on current statistics, people rarely live for more than 120 years.
The author:
A report on centenarians in China
The recipe for a long life:
Outdoor activities; communication with others; a healthy diet with lots of fruit, vegetables, and low-fat food
III. Critical thinking:
If the technology mentioned in the passage exists, are you in favor of it being used? Give your reasons.

I. Brainstorming:
As a teenager, do you prefer spending time alone, or with your parents?
II. Scanning:
1.Who suggested the plan to play golf on Friday?
Ryan, the author’s son, suggested it.
2.Was the author welcome to play golf with his son?
No, he wasn’t.
III. Detailed understanding:
1.Why didn’t the author say “no” even though he had intended to?
On the one hand, he thought his son needed his company; on the other hand, he loved his son very much.
2. What does the author mean by “ there was a strange pause”?
He didn’t expect not to be invited to play golf with his son.  His son was surprised that his father thought he would join the game.
3. How did the author feel when he realized he was not invited? How can you tell?
He was hurt, thinking, “How could you do this to me?”
4. Did the author show that he was hurt? Why?
No. He wanted to hide his embarrassment.
5. Why did the author laugh too when his wife laughed loudly?
At first, he was hurt. Later, he realized that his son had grown up, and that growth needs space. This space would be much better for his son than if he hovered over him.
IV. More detailed understanding:
1.What did the author mean by the word “dagger”?
Not only did his son not need his care, he also asked for money. This hurt the author.
2. Why did the son exclude his father when planning to play golf?
He might have wanted to be independent of his father, and needed space for growth.
3. Why was the author hurt?
The feeling of abandonment. They used to be together all the time, but now his son wouldn’t depend on him.
4. What does the author mean by the word “change” in the article?
The author used to always take care of his son. They spent all their time together. But it seemed his son had grown up, and didn’t need his care. The bond between them seemed broken.
