Key:

III. After-reading
Writing:
Nowadays, social media has become an essential part of our lives. How has it influenced our lives? What should we pay attention to when using social media? Write a short article describing the impact of social media and things we should pay attention to when we are using it.

D. he didn’t want to be dragged out in the cold
2. What inspired the father to help the Jensens?

4. What did the author learn from that Christmas?
A. Helping those in need makes us feel good.
B. Christmas gifts are unimportant for poor people.
C. We should live in harmony with people around us.
D. Being helpful sometimes brings people good luck.

Key:
1. C。从第1段“feeling like the world was over for me because there hadn't been enough money to buy me the rifle that I'd wanted that year”可知,作者感到世界末日来临了一样,是因为没钱买步枪,圣诞节得不到自己想要的礼物,所以不开心。
2. B。从“He went into the woodshed and came out with an armload of wood”可以看出父亲直接取到的是木头,而从下文的“I rode by just today… Little Jakey was out digging around in the woodpile. They're out of wood,”可知,父亲途径Jensen家的时候,看见那么小的孩子在外面挖木头,于是可以推断出是这件事激发了父亲要帮助这一家人的想法。
3. D。从最后一段“I wasn't the same person when I went back out to get the wood. I had a big lump in my throat, and there were tears in my eyes too.”

III. Language study
1. Not only wasn’t I getting the rifle for Christmas, but now Pa was dragging me out in the cold.
Not only did he turn up late, he also forgot his books.

2. It shouldn’t have been our concern.
She shouldn’t have left the hospital so soon, as she had not yet recovered.

3. She bit her lower lip to keep it from trembling and then tears filled her eyes and started running down her cheeks.
