1.How much do you know about Charles Dickens?
2. Have you ever read Dickens’ novels? Would you please introduce one to the class?
Brief Introduction
Charles Dickens is one of England’s most famous novelists. He described life in the middle of the 19th century, a period that is now called Victorian, as it was when Queen Victoria ruled Britain.
II. Fast reading
1.Why did Dickens hate the idea of statues?
He wanted to be remembered for his work alone.
2. What is Dickens’ influence on the world according to the passage?
Key: 1) As the most famous novelist, his works are still being read and studied constantly.
2) As a celebrity, he influenced people’s way of living with his publicity. For instant, he invented the way Christmas is celebrated.
3) As the conscience of 19th century England, he tried to speaks for the poor in his novels.
III. Careful reading
1. Why did the author tell of the biographer’s mentioning the report of a child?
To prove that Dickens, as a famous novelist and celebrity, had a great influence on the world back then, even on the way people lived.
Translate the sentence into Chinese

II. Pre-reading
Look through the whole passage and decide if the following statements are true or false.
1.The giant squid is the largest mammal to have ever lived on Earth.

3.Blue whales usually eat large animals like giant squids.
4.Blue whales can move from an area with no food to another area rich in food without eating.
III. While-reading
1. Which animal has the largest eyes of any animal?
The giant squid.
2. What unique advantage does the giant squid have thanks to its giant eyes?
The squid’s giant eyes mean that it can spot sperm whales, who eat giant squids, from a safe distance.
3. What’s the weight and length of a baby blue whale?
A baby blue whale (calf) weighs up to 2,700 kg and is up to 8 meters long.
4. What’s surprising about the diet of a blue whale?
They almost entirely eat a small creature called krill (磷虾).
IV. Language points
1. A team of scientists has looked at the body sizes of 25 sea creatures including whales, squids (乌贼), and other ocean giants for a project.
contain强调容量,include强调范围.
CONTAIN和INCLUDE都是及物动词,有"包括.包含"的意思.
contain指包含的全部内容或容量.如果指的是里面所含的成分时,也用contain.
如:1. It contains a powerful drug which affects mosquitoes.
意思是 它含有一种可以防止蚊虫叮咬的强效药物.
2. The bottle contains two glasses of beer. 意思是这瓶子可装两杯啤酒.
3. This book contains all the information you need,
意思是这本书包含你所需的一切资料.
4. The pill contains vitamins. 这药丸中含有多种维生素. 
5. I couldn`t contain my laughter.
6. Try to contain your anger!
include的宾语指的是部分内容或容量,表示一个整体由几个部分组成,侧重包括者只是整体的一部分. including是介词,included是过去分词形容词化,意为“包括在内”.
如: There are ten of us here, including Jim/There are ten of us here, Jim included. 我们这里一共有十个人,包括三个女孩.
Many students went out to play, including Tom/Many students went out to play, Tom included.
2. Even a baby blue whale (calf) weighs up to 2,700 kg and is up to 8 meters long.
up to置于数词、名词之前。
表示“达到……数量”。
1)Up to ten people can sleep in this tent.
这个帐篷至多能睡十人。
2)I can take up to four people in my car.
我的汽车最多能坐四个人.
3)The project will create up to 40 new jobs.
这项工程将提供40个新的工作岗位。
4)There are up to three million Mexican people in the southwestern part of the United States.

What can you find in a closet, according to the article?
In a closet you can find a collection of exactly what makes you the person you are.
III. Careful reading
1. What did the author see when he opened the door to his dad’s closet last Christmas?
He saw ties, too-big shirts, and shoes.
There were the vital things: a handkerchief his dad would rip out of his jacket pocket when he’d lift him up after work, the bright red windbreaker (防风衣) his dad would wear on family vacations.
Beneath all of those were jars of pennies.
2. In the end, what did the author realize and understand?
He realized then that he didn’t need to see the handkerchief and windbreaker to remember his dad. The objects were just an outer layer above his warm memories.
Clothes don’t make the man, and though objects may help us tell a story, they are not stories themselves.
IV. Discussion
Was the closet important? And why was the author worried?
He could remember the dad he had before
He was worried that would go away when his mom moved.
V. Language points
